What Is the Most Secure Job of 2008?

Some jobs have been rewarded with the recession-proof tag, and that is something to celebrate in naming the Best of 2008. These jobs have been holding their own amidst a faltering economy, which makes them pretty secure given their relative strength in the weak job market. You make the call: Which is most secure?

There is one job that has all of the suggestions beat hands down. It is a career that without it's existence, modern civilization as we know it would come to a screeching halt and there would be widespread disease and pandemonium as a result. Am I biased? Yes. Guess what that occupation is yet? Just think about it. Plumbing! Unless you want to live where unsanitary conditions are prevalent such as in third world countries where you might wipe with your left hand or be subjected to fecal matter rolling down the gutter in the street, consider this trade. I make $42.00 per hour! On second thought, don't consider it. Leave it to me and all the other people like me in this trade to keep you healthy in the most rudimentary aspect of civilization. Just think about it.

Hehehe ZCoral! I was thinking 'my job is pretty safe,' and I do indeed work for the federal government: the US Congress. I seriously doubt they're going to lay us off, since we already do the work of 3 people for the price of 1/2 a person. . .lol Other government jobs aren't so safe, though. Just today the biggest headline in San Francisco was that the city is laying off over 700 people. Ouch, Merry Christmas. :-(

even healthcare is not secure - at UTMB Galveston almost 3,800 people have lost their jobs. So of course UT is trying to place them at hospitals around Texas (at the medical center in Houston, for example) and so no one else can get a job.

after i clicked my vote i realized that i should have said health care but i chose energy - since i think that there's so much technology and money being put into that sector that there's only going to be more growth and opportunity. (assuming that you're not in the traditional energy industries - i.e. coal, oil etc)

I'm not sure if any job is safe at this point in time. "Government jobs for everyone!" - I would rather gov't jobs for everyone than the current state our Country is in. So Mr. President elect bring on those gov't jobs. I'm certain that the thousands of people standing on those unemployment lines will be thankful.

Let me tell you it's not sales or customer service. Everyone I know is in the health care field. I am in sales right now but am in college hoping to change that all someday in the near future.

It's definitely not sales ... my company depends on ad sales for a lot of its revenue, and we're hurting. I feel bad for our salespeople. Hoping IT is pretty safe, though ... my husband is starting in the field and since my job (publishing) sure isn't stable, we need one in the family that is!

Health care, hands down. You can't send those jobs overseas because people need to be treated ASAP. There is always a huge demand for nurses, CNAs, doctors, med techs, etc. I think government jobs would also be pretty secure because if the government needs something, they're going to hire people to be able to provide it. That being said, I'm REALLY glad I work in health care and that my husband works in a firm that is largely contracting for the government. I think both of us are pretty secure in our jobs.

I've just fallen victim to the recession... :( Lost my job this morning in advertising sales for magazines (double whammy!!)... Customer service as safe, eh? Maybe I will go back to Barnes and Noble...

I think healthcare is relatively stable, but there are still many places that are hurting.

I say its a tie between healthcare and customer service. Only because in a recession when companies can't pour money into marketing campaigns to bring new customers, focus changes to customer support to keep existing customers happy so they don't leave.

I'd say healthcare. They are begging for nurses especially in most hospitals.

Obviously, government. It's the only recession proof job - there will always be a government! Not to mention, with the Democratic Party in charge, the federal government is only going to grow larger and larger. Government jobs for everyone!
