News Flash: Valentine's Day Spending Up From Last Year

A study released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) shows that consumers plan to spend an average $122.98 on Valentine's Day. That's more than the average was last year and total retail spending is estimated to reach $17.02 billion. Men are projected to outspend women this year dishing out an average of $163.37, while it's estimated that women will spend an average of $84.72. I'm taking it easy this year and will be making a nice dinner at home with my Valentine, so we'll definitely be falling below the average.

I'm spending a little bit more than the average male (165! Yikes!), but Valentine's Day is also our anniversary and when I saw this gift, I couldn't pass it up. I really think this gift will blow him away unlike any gift I've ever given him before.

Hmm. I don't think I've ever spent that much on Valentine's Day, and I won't be this year, especially. A little gift and some dinner should suffice. :) After all, as cheesy as it sounds, it's more about being together.

this is good news. My boyfriends family is in the jewelry business and business has been down. We don't usually do more than dinner though. Christmas in Dec (I got an iphone) my bday in Jan (got a camera) by Feb he's usually pretty broke haha

A nice homemade dinner (and hand-crafted card!) for me and my boyfriend... not because there isn't money to spend... but because all of the gifts have gotten out of control. After a hectic holiday season, I think low-key and personal is the way to go.

Yea since we just had Christmas, New Years, AND our Anni...we decided just to soend a quiet night at home and make a yummy dinner and romantic bath :)

I usually get dinner and flowers. I never ask for it though. This year my fiance is going to be away so I will just be getting flowers most likely. I'll mail him some chocolate to his hotel.

I don't know what my husband will get me for Valentine's day, but he always spoils me! I know he's taking me to dinner at my favorite restaurant, but other than that, it will be a surprise. I'm not sure what to get him either!

We just dont do it. We buy shit for each other all year long, lol. I think our birthdays and anniversaries are a bigger deal.

Last year, my boyfriend and I set a limit of $20 on presents to each other and I absolutely loved my present because it was thoughtful and from his heart. I definitely think we are going to set a limit like that again for this year.

That seems like an awful lot to spend on Valentine's Day! I bet some rich people buying really extravagant bits of jewelry skew the average people spend.
