Do You Feel Uneasy When People Ask About Your Salary?

My friend was telling me how she felt a little uncomfortable when an acquaintance asked her how much she made. The salary question was mainly triggered by my friend's promotion, but I'm wondering if you would feel the same way.

Do you not mind sharing what your salary is or do you find it rude when people pry?

I'm really underpaid, so I feel uncomfortable talking about how much I make.

No, but it could be because I make minimum wage and will never make more than that in my current position. So it just sort of...is!

Today itself one of my cousins asked this question to me. He's one of the most respected person in my family (and his down-to-earth-self with everyone in universe); that could be the reason why I told him everything about my salary, as soon as he asked. 'May be' I would've thought a little - whether to answer and how - if some other relative would have asked, but yes I do believe that answer to this question should be shared with only immediate family and closest friends; rest of the lot asks just for sake of curiosity and relationship doesn't get hampered even if you close the topic in a subtle/clever way. I wouldn't mind if my parents asked and I'll certainly tell my husband when I am married, but I don't think that salary should be discussed outside of immediate family. It is not even something I discuss with friends.

Depends on who it is. I am not embarassed about how much I make, but if an aquaintance asked, even if I said I got a promotion I'd still think it's none of her business. Only close friends/family get to know, and I'd only entertain questions asked in an appropriate context. None of my best friends have EVER asked me, to be honest. and only my parents and live-in boyfriend know, for obvious reasons.
