Would You Celebrate Thanksgiving Early to Save on Airfare?

Fall has arrived, and with it comes the reminder that the holidays will be here before we know it. Airfare expert Rick Seaney suggests getting the family together for Thanksgiving one month earlier than it's regularly scheduled time to save money on airfare. Prices are at their most expensive over the November holiday and he says you can save a fortune by carving the turkey and watching football in October instead.

It's one thing to celebrate Valentine's Day one day late to save on the cost of dinner, but how do you feel about Rick's idea of organizing the whole family for a faux-Thanksgiving?

Hmm, this is an interesting idea but it wouldn't work for me. We take a vacation as a family at this time every year so that no one gets stuck hosting because we all HATE IT :) Part of the fun is knowing everyone else is running around like chickens with their heads cut off while we're luxuriating, hehe.

i think that if you're only talking about one or 2 days early then perhaps but if you're talking a whole month early - then no. i think that there's something to be said about seasonality and if you take Thanksgiving out of it's rightful time then you're really throwing things off.

Why not? I would consider it! Last year we had two Thanksgivings: one on the actual day, and one the week before with some family who couldn't make it to the actual day. I called it Fakesgiving.

If you want to do your visiting early to save money, just do it -It's not as if your family can go to work or school on Thanksgiving as if it was a regular day, so there's still going to be a feeling of absense if your intention was to celebrate a specific special day together.

I live in MA and my family lives in CA. My boyfriend's family lives in MA so we celebrate Thanksgiving with them and then go to CA for Christmas. I can't imagine celebrating Thanksgiving or Christmas early because I have a huge family and that would be difficult to coordinate. In any case, I plan on moving back to CA in the future and then this issue of expensive airfare will be a moot point.

Another reason to have it early, is now most all of my extended family is married and have 2 locations to go, so if we did it early it would work for everyone!

I don't have to worry about airfare at this point in my life - I live within a few hours of all my immediate relatives. However, there is a chance my husband I will be moving in the next couple years - and I imagine we'll just celebrate Thanksgiving at home and spend Christmas with the family... of course it all depends on how far away we are!

If I was really far away from family I would celebrate at a different time. 2 years ago when my husband and I lived across the country from family, we celebrated Christmas early and saved about $500 on plane tickets that way!

I've been trying for a few years to convince my family to celebrate Christmas the first week of January. Not only do you get the after Christmas deals, but the New Years sales as well. I hate giving presents on Christmas knowing it's going to be half off within days.

Oh, I don't care. Traveling on Thanksgiving weekend is a nightmare in the pocketbook & at the airports. It just sucks so anything to make my life easier... Also, we should be thankful every day. I don't like much Thanksgiving food anyway.

Nope. The key is to plan in advance. I will be spending Thanksgiving in VA Beach and I've decided to drive this year.

I wouldn't change the date!!! But I could choose "No, I want a traditional Thanksgiving on November 27, as it should be." because our Thanksgiving (in Canada) is on October 13th :P
