Some of you are lucky enough to enjoy sales tax-free lives on a daily basis, but for many of us sales tax can add a significant amount to purchases. Several states have smartly introduced designated days for shopping sales tax-free (sales tax holidays) before the end of 2008, encouraging their residents to get out and shop already.

Some states' holidays coincide with the back-to-school buying bonanza, others are holding out for holiday shopping season, in the spirit of giving, of course, and some are trying to get residents excited about energy efficient products.

Some of the sales tax holidays have already come and gone but there are still a few in the pipeline. See which seven states can look forward to some tax-free shopping (a few dates are just around the corner) and which items are included when you read more.

  • Texas: August 15 to 17, no sales tax on clothing and backpacks up to $100 per item.
  • Massachusetts: August 16 to 17, no sales tax on purchases of $2,500 or less.
  • Connecticut: August 17 to 23, no sales tax on clothing and footwear up to $300 per item.
  • West Virginia: September 1 to 7, no sales tax on energy efficient products up to $2,500.
  • Georgia: October 2 to 5, no sales tax on energy and water efficient products up to $1,500.
  • Virginia: October 10 to 13, energy efficient products up to $2,500.
  • Washington, D.C.: November 21 to December 7, no sales tax on clothing up to $100 per item.
