Some of you are lucky enough to enjoy sales tax-free lives on a daily basis, but for many of us sales tax can add a significant amount to purchases. Several states have smartly introduced designated days for shopping sales tax-free (sales tax holidays) before the end of 2008, encouraging their residents to get out and shop already.
Some states' holidays coincide with the back-to-school buying bonanza, others are holding out for holiday shopping season, in the spirit of giving, of course, and some are trying to get residents excited about energy efficient products.
Some of the sales tax holidays have already come and gone but there are still a few in the pipeline. See which seven states can look forward to some tax-free shopping (a few dates are just around the corner) and which items are included when you read more.
- Texas: August 15 to 17, no sales tax on clothing and backpacks up to $100 per item.
- Massachusetts: August 16 to 17, no sales tax on purchases of $2,500 or less.
- Connecticut: August 17 to 23, no sales tax on clothing and footwear up to $300 per item.

- Virginia: October 10 to 13, energy efficient products up to $2,500.

1Ours was last week (FL) and lucky me I went to South Carolina 2 weeks ago to visit my friends and it happen to be tax-free week for them so I went shopping like crazy over there too.
2darn ny lol
3I'm jealous and will not discuss the sales tax here.
4I live in Oregon and we do not have sales tax, it never passes on the ballot. When I shop in Seattle you can show your Oregon drivers license and not have to pay sales tax there either.
5As far as I know Florida is not having a tax free back to school week this year because the state budget is too tight, but some retailers have been honoring it in one way or another anyway. (They the tax % off, but it's not a state thing)
6they used to have a tax-free week in Florida right before hurricane season but that stopped recently - and it was only good on things that you would need for the storms. in NYC they would have it around back to school as well i think - and it's really good business as far as im concerned. i think that i would be apt to buy more things
7MN has no tax on clothing!!
8My city/county never participates in our state because they don't get reimbursed for lost revenues. It's annoying until you consider the services you'd have to lose. I'd rather have a library than no taxes on a skirt.
9I'm in California and have to pay taxed on everything everyday. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10DC had one ast weekend. I bought new running shoes and some tops. I miss back to school shopping!
11This is a really intriguing concept. I used to live in Oregon (I live in California now) and not having sales tax was a wonder.
12*last weekend.
13Man, nothing in the Southwest at all! I can't wait to finish school and move up to Oregon!
14no tax here in oregon where i live...yea!
15I'm in Texas, but we never shop during Tax-Free Weekend. It's like trying to shop on Black Friday!
Actually, all of the good sales (BOGO on clothing - especially jeans!, buy $X worth of stuff and get something free, closeout 40-60% off) are on BEFORE the tax-free. And you get a better selection in sizes and styles, and you don't have to worry about long lines! On the tax-free weekend we only save $8.25 for every $100 you spend. Unless you buy a lot of things that are close to $100, it's not worth it.
16I remember tax-free weekends right before schoool starts in ny. it was always a huge shopping time. living in nj now though, every day is sales tax free
17I try to get most everything online to avoid Cali's outrageous taxes. Vitamins, protein powder, as well as clothes and shoes, and you bet I search for free shipping, coupon codes...it's all worth it. If I have to pay taxes, I wait for good sales, like around the holidays (Labor Day coming up!) Saves me gas too. I will cry if they start taxing everything online!
18i live in MA and it is currently the no tax holiday!!! YAY!!!
19I went and i got a laptop for school!
