Prenuptial agreements are traditionally designed to dictate what will happen with a couple's finances in case of divorce, and now they're expanding to include some clauses for other money-related issues.

Health care is something that's already pushing some couples to the altar; in just the past year, seven percent of adults in the US married for health insurance. Insurance doesn't come cheap and it can be difficult to find good coverage that isn't very expensive — that's why some couples are designing prenups with a clause allowing for continued health insurance should they divorce.

The appearance of these clauses suggests health care is a big worry for those looking to the future. What do you think of the inclusion of health insurance in prenups?

"Pre-nups should protect your assets, not help you steal from your partner." I agree with this. In this case, it's stealing from an EX-PARTNER, not a current partner. That makes it worse.

When my SIL got divorced she got it written in their divorce papers that he had to leave her on his insurance, he got remarried and i am not sure what happened then.

sooooo tacky.While I can see the appeal, I HATE pre-nups like this that entitle a person to something their spouse has/earns. Pre-nups should protect your assets, not help you steal from your partner.They boyfriend & I plan to sign a pre-nup before we walk down the aisle, but healthcare is a non-issue because it's free in Canada.

How do insurance providers feel about this? They won't let you keep your kids on the policy after they turn a certain age; I can't see how they'd let you keep an ex-spouse. Can a prenup really mandate that a company lets you keep someone on your policy? Or is this just saying "I will cover the costs of your getting a new insurance policy for X time after the divorce."

i guess i kind of feel bad about this one. part of the reason that i want to get married sooner rather than later is because of health insurance. my fiance is a freelancer and he has his own company and therefore he does not have health insurance and it upsets me all the time since i tell him to go to the dr or dentist for things and he won't since he doesn't have insurance. if we were married then he would have coverage and that's the really important thing to me. i don't know if i would include anything about it in our prenup but i can understand how people want to make sure that they are covered regardless of what happens in their marriage. i don't think that i would want to leave him in the lurch if anything would happen and vice versa if the situation changes by the time anything happens in our marriage.
