You know how kids' cereal and snacks are typically positioned so they can see them? Well, adults hardly escape tricky marketing techniques at the grocery store. Next time you're food shopping, compare prices of the items at chest level and the items on the upper and lower shelves. Most stores stock the most expensive items where they're easy to grab and go. A simple scan up and down could knock some serious dollars off your total.

Great tip!
Ooh yeah, do this with the big bags of cereal (Malt-O-Meal). Stores like Walmart carry like 10 varieties of bagged cereal that you can get at seriously half the price of a smaller, bigger-name version. We pour our bags into a big plastic container that seals tight so we don't have to mess with sealing up the giant bag every day!
Oh AND sometimes it helps to take the extra time bending down to see those bottom shelves, particularly if an item looks like it needs restocking. So many times I've looked at the bottom shelf of an "empty" item, only to see that the best-priced item is waaaay back in the very back where you can't see it (because everyone keeps buying it!)
i've learned over the past couple years to really read the labels and not necessarily go for the store brand or a brand name food. if you don't look to see what's on special and what the real costs are for things, then you're going to get shocked.
I definately shop by price. My boyfriend shops bny what's in it, so we make a great team.
I'm awesome at food shopping while still saving money.
And don't forget to bring your coupons! My market doubles and sometimes triples them!
Oooh, those grocery stores are so sneaky. Lately I've been going to Trader Joe's and their produce is quite affordable. It also keeps me from wanting all the things available at the supermarket, which has been pricey lately.
See, this is another reason I like Aldi. There is only one brand of everything, so you don't get sidetracked. You only have one brand of yogurt, one brand of cereal, one brand of rice, etc. I always go in there and pick out exactly what I need and then I'm outta there. However, when I go to Walmart, I can definitely get sidetracked because they put certain items in spots that they ordinarily wouldn't so it's way easier to buy more stuff than you actually need.
