News Flash: Macy's Announces Job Cuts

After a 7.1 percent drop in sales last month, Macy's decided that it will cut close to 2,500 jobs this year. The cuts will be isolated to management jobs and the company is going to consolidate its American operations to create fewer divisions. Macy's reported that about 950 positions at the Minneapolis offices, 850 positions at the Macy’s Midwest offices in St. Louis and 750 positions at the Macy’s Northwest offices in Seattle will be affected by the moves intended to reduce costs and boost sales.

MACY'S IS FAMOUS FOR LETTING ALL THE GOOD ASSOCIATES GO. THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE SO MANY PROBLEMS. THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT IT IS THAT WHEN CHRISTMAS ROLLS AROUND THEY WILL HIRE LOTS OF ASSOCIATES WHICH WILL GIVE THE MANAGERS SOMETHING TO DO.

THe people who were let off were mainly buyers HR and and people in the HQ dept. That is too bad for minneapolis economy and well as those people. THat is so many jobs to be lost! I work right by many of these people and am sorry this is happening to them.

I don't work at Macy*s, but I think that all the way around it's very sad news... Anyone losing their job and the economic circumstances they have to deal with, that we all have to deal with, is just sad. :(

I agree with Skinny about the name change. People in Twin Cities had their stores go from Dayton's to Marshall Field's to Macy's. They lot of customers just by changing the name. The Mall of America store hasn't been as affected because it's been a Macy's since it opened.

retail stores close and open all the time. Its the natural way of the economy. We used to not have so many choices you know? when i was a kid there wasnt a target or wal mart or best buy. We had Sears, Jc Penneys and woolworths. These days companies have to stay competitive in order to generate sales and stay out of the Red. Macys, to me isnt that great, not competitive...and they are paying for that now.

I think they made the mistake when they changed the names to all the local department stores that they already owned to Macy's. Our downtown Macy's (which used to be a Kaufmann's) is a baron place because "its not Kaufmann's". I now shop there more then anywhere else because I don't have to deal with other shoppers!
