From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, 2,712 cities from 83 countries will celebrate the World Wildlife Fund initiative, Earth Hour, by turning off the lights. The hope is to save energy and promote climate change awareness.
Shutting off the electricity and unplugging electronics that are needlessly sucking up energy is one of the simplest ways to cut costs around the house, especially in the Spring when it is warmer and lighter in the evenings. I know my utilities bill skyrockets during the Winter, but was a bit smaller in February. What do you spend monthly to keep the lights, heat, and water running in your abode?

In the winter about 130 bucks a month. In the summer about 100.
1well we live in a condo so our water & heat bill is part of our rent. Our power is about $50 a month in the winter (because there's only like 6hrs of daylight stupid canada!!) and around $20 in the summer.
2We have a really old house that's not insulated and our winter utility bill is generally around $150 because we use a woodburning stove as accessory heat (we have about 80 cords of wood on our land up north, so that heat is basically free). In the summer, we don't use AC, so it's about $70
3When I lived in my apartment, my 2 roommates and i spent anywhere from $50 - $300/mo on utilities [our electricity, landlord paid for water], depending on the weather and who forgot to turn off the A/C when they left.
I live at home now, and I know it's something ridiculous...I think it's almost $200+/mo just on electricity, even though we've finally gotten in a period down here where we don't need the A/C or the heat. And water is like $30/mo., and the waste is $30/mo, too. But I an my whole entire family have never been very good about unplugging things when they're not being used - mostly because we use them frequently, and it's difficult to get to the outlets [most of them are behind large objects, like TVs, and we can't move those things anywhere else in the rooms without having a lot of wires showing everywhere].
4I spend $50 - $100 on electricity depending on the time of year - it's higher in the winter and summer. My water bill is about $30.
5Our building covers heating and hot water, so my roommate and I split a $28 hydro bill. I never want to move.
6Oh, and occasionally we get a free month for using less than their estimates.
7I live in the desert so summer time my electricy goes up to around $300 and that's with a pretty decent discount from SCE. My average through the year is $150. Summertime is the worst, we don't use the heater in the winter really. Summer I put the AC at 85, so it only goes on if it's hotter then 85. So I'm never really very cool, but we can't afford to put it lower! If I need a break from the heat I'll go tot eh book store or somthing

8$209.00 a month, every month. My utilities company has an equal payment plan, which means no surprises on the bill. If I've used less than estimated at the end of the year, I get a credit towards my next bill.

11$50-$100 depending. The lowest it's ever been was $37, but I was out of town for two weeks. The highest was $167 and I still can't figure out why it was that high.
12$50 is the average electric year round and it's only that high because i have heat/uv lamp on my many reptiles, it would be about $25 if I wasn't heating/lighting them. don't pay for water at our current place but it was about $30 at our previous place.

17i spend too much i think. luckily i don't pay for water but i do pay for electricity - which right now is about $80 a month - but it's been higher/lower depending on the time of year. we don't have a landline so i don't pay that - and then cable is ridic.

I'm not even sure. My landlord included utilities in my rent, which is really unusual for my area! I love just sending one check for eveything! I keep the heat low and am responsible with the electricity and water, so he knocked $100.00 off my rent when I asked! It's a win-win.
20Wow! You guys have it pretty easy! Winter electric for me is around $190... summer, it's gone as high as $325... Gas is usually $45-50 a month, and water is around $90..... I have a 3/2 house. With 4 people in it. Lol...
21I’m still getting used to the higher utility costs in our new house. Water is $25-30 a month. Gas (heat/water heater) has been about $160 a month so far; electricity (everything else) has been about $60. Those will both change as we use the heat less and the AC more. We’re upgrading our insulation this spring/summer, so I hope the heating and cooling bills will drop.
An interesting thing about our gas company is that they show us what the previous owners’ bill was for this time last year. I thought our first gas bill was super high, but they spent about $50 more. So while we’re still working on conserving energy, at least I know we’re not as bad as we could be!
22I was lucky enough to find a place where all utilities, with the exception of water, are included in the rent. Water usually runs about $36 a month.

The gas bill kills me in the winter. I never even set it above 65 degrees - we freeze our a$$es off and pay $200/mth. The house was built in 1921 and has no insulation.
24My stepdad pays at least $500 a month on just water. We have a 2 story house with 8 people residing in it. We also have a laundry room that we use frequently. At least 3 or four times a year, the water bill goes higher than $1000 a month. I know the electric bill is also ridiculously high. I'm not sure about gas and heat.
