My mail pile generally looks like this: credit card offer, catalog, credit card offer, catalog. See a pattern that reminds you of the mail on your kitchen counter? All of the credit card companies congratulate me because — lucky me — I've qualified for their amazingly low interest rate! Sometimes I just throw them away, and sometimes I open an envelope or two just to make sure I'm not discarding something useful. So far, the random mail I've opened has also ended up in the shredder.

Did you know there's a way to put a stop to this endless stream of junk mail? You have the right to opt out of receiving unsolicited credit card offers which, by the way, are based on your credit report. To find out how to opt out read more.
There are two choices; you can call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT or go to the Opt Out website and follow these steps.
- Click opt-out button.
- Choose to opt-out for five years or permanently. The permanent option requires that you mail in a form and the five year option can be completed online.
- Provide name, address, social security number and date of birth. The site says that your social security number and date of birth are optional, but they recommend supplying those details to successfully process your request.
Credit companies have 30 days to comply, so expect to receive offers during the month following your request. Do credit card offers annoy you enough to opt-out?

I'm so glad you wrote about this. I immediately signed up to opt out from all the junk mail I receive. Bye bye stupid credit card offers!
1Thanks for posting this tip.
2I hate getting these. Thanks for sharing this!
3thank you for posting that - i just added my information. i HATE getting those things and i always get scared that someone is going to steal my identity!
4OMG these are soo annoying. And they are always the same cards over and over and over and over...
5Thanks for the tip! I hate getting those things too.
6Definitely thanks so much - I'd heard about this, but I'm thinking the ability to sign up online might have just happened in the last year or so? Regardless, not only is it less annoyance for me, it's less waste for the environment. YAY!
7Wait, if you opt out can you not apply for credit cards or insurance offers?
8Thanks, Savvy
9Hi aistea311-
Opting out won't prevent you from applying for credit cards, you just won't receive offers in the mail anymore. Thanks for stopping by!
Savvy
10Oh my gosh THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I can't wait until I no longer have to sort through these annoying offers!
11Thanks Savvy!! This is great!!
12Awesome, thanks so much! If i need a credit card, I'll go looking for them.
13it's been about 6 months since i opted out and it's a wonderful feeling when i reach into the mailbox and i don't end up with 6 credit card offers that i will throw away and never look at. and i feel good about helping the environment by saving some trees
14Thank you for posting this Savvy! I have a question though, will this mess with my credit score?
15Hi koolbr33z3-
Opting out will not affect your credit score at all. The only consequence is that you won't receive credit card offers in the mail anymore, which I think is a beautiful thing!
Savvy
16I throw them all away!
17that's so great! I get like a billion of those at my parents house every time I come home.
18I hate getting those. Thanks!
19Thanks for posting this tip! I didn't know they had an opt-out thing for credit card notices!
20Thank you, Savvy!!
21I did this awhile back and just realized that I haven't been getting all those offers. Ha! It is really nice though.
22I still get junk mail, but not so much.
Thanks again for answering my question, Savvy! This is a great website!
23The link for the Opt-Out site isn't working for me ...
24Hallelujah! Thanks Savvy! I'm glad you're here and can't wait to read more!
25I got a bunch of offers for the 30 day period after I opted out, but I'm happily free of them now.
26THANK you! I get a ton of these since I work hard to have a pretty decent credit score and they're annoying!! I'm doing this ASAP.
27Hi rivrchild-

Hope it works for you this time!

28Green dimes in another way to opt out.
29http://www.greendimes.com/ - they cost $20 but they monitor every month.
I'm a little bit worried - yes, the option sounds great, but is this a private company, or a government-sponsored initiative, or what? I'm just wondering where my information is actually going...
30I permanently opted out last year because it is just too easy for the pre-approvals to fall into the wrong hands. The volume of credit card offers, loan offers, catalogs, and other junk-offer mail has decreased from five or more a day to one a month, love it!
I also contacted my CC companies and requested to not receive offers from them or partner companies. This also required a form to fill out and send back.
One more thing I did, and this may not be for everyone, I froze all of my credit reports. I decided to do so in case there were any security breaches with my data - between work, schools, banks, shopping web sites, etc. - I have a lot of info out there and I love the extra security.
Very nice to see consumer friendly security options being implemented.
31Tinsleystyle.
I wondered whether it was a private company or not as well, and ultimately, I opted out by calling the number because I didn't want to do it online.
Keep in mind, that opting out is your consumer right, the site and number are just a way to help you opt out to all consumer reporting agencies. Speaking from experience it is safe, and will be noted on your credit reports.
32Btw, I am discussing Optout prescreen, not Green dimes.
There is no need to pay for something that you can easily accomplish for free and without any hassles.
Also want to add, I believe the CRAs run Optout prescreen.
From the site: "OptOutPrescreen.com is the only internet website authorized by Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion for consumers to Opt-Out of firm offers of credit or insurance."
https://www.optoutprescreen.com/faq.htm#14
33Thank you for this brilliant piece of info. My shredder is on it's last shred I'm afraid.
xoxo
34Thank you, thank you, thank you.
35Thanks! I was searching for this link. I used this a long time ago and it actually worked, but when I refinanced my house the credit card offers started again. I will bookmark it this time.
36Thanks, I'm going to opt out right now!!
37Thanks chakra_healer
38awesome! thanks!!
39Thank you! There's something about having this in front of you on the screen that prompts a person to DO it. I may not have done it without you.
40I am gonna do this too!! yay! I would never have done it without this site either
41I love savvysugar ♥
I'm really late, but here's some more reassurance from the FTC (4th one down):
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/prescreen.shtm
Of course, if you don't trust the above link, you can always go to the FTC site > Consumer Protection and highlight over Credit & Loans > Credit Cards & Consumer Loans, then scroll down (or use your browser's search function) to find the link "Prescreened Offers of Credit and Insurance".
42Thanks Savvy. I get about 2 of these a day so it will be a huge relief to open my mailbox to NOTHING soon.
