You get many perks when you're leading a country, and a high six-digit salary is one of them. President Obama's salary is $400,000 (not factoring in his book sales) while British Prime Minister David Cameron is getting paid a hefty $231,000. I know that sounds like a lot, but wait till you hear how much this guy makes.

The highest paid politician title goes to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was last reported to be making around $2 million.

I've always known the president made that and I think it's fine. What he gets paid comes from our taxes, plus all the extras he gets for free, then all the money he can make afterwards from books, interviews, appearances, etc. I don't feel bad for him at all. Lots of people have high pressure jobs and don't make that much money. I've always thought if politicians made less money, then the laws and regulations they make would probably reflect the majority of the voting public a lot better.

Agreed, skigurl. Also, you have to have a certain level of wealth to become the president. Obviously campaigns are run primarily on donations and through public funding (though, someone like Romney could probably come close to financing his own campaign), but you have to be at a certain social station to even be in the position that makes you electable.

I also knew approximately how much Obama made, and everyone is right - it's not a ton given the responsibilities, although it's a lot more when you consider their family doesn't have to buy anything. But it's also not a lot considering the first lady wouldn't have the opportunity to earn a salary. I think if it were any more, however, people would lose their minds about it's not a smart way to spend the country's tax dollars.

I'm not surprised because I've always known how much the president makes, but I've always thought it's a pretty small amount. The same goes for members of congress, etc. Also, I think the catch for president at least is that you live for free in terms of transportation, food, housing, etc., so salary + benefits is much more than $400,000.

Agreed, OSR. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to pull down $400K/ year, but it's not much money compared to what, for example, partners in big law firms make per year. And the amount of stress - yikes !

Actually, $400,000 is really not a lot to be president... when you consider the pressures and contrast that with private industry salaries. Just sayin'
