Savvy Community: How Not to Burn Bridges

Goodbye is always hard. Whether it be with a friend, lover, or workplace. The question of how to exit without making any enemies is a common one on Savvy, and I understand why. Leaving a job with grace requires careful planning and effort. Reader msame recently asked for tips for quitting without burning bridges.

Make up a family emergency that requires your urgent attention. Example: Your elderly mother (grandmother?) fell and broke a hip and will need you to move in and play caregiver for an undetermined amount of time. Your sister just had a baby and needs your help while she's adjusting. Or, just tell her that you're going back to school so you can pursue a higher paying career. Or that you've met the love of your life and you're moving out of state to be with them. :-)

Giving plenty of notice is probably the most important step you can take to preserve your relationship with your current employer -- no one likes to be left high and dry! If you can give more than two weeks, definitely offer to do so, and spend the time you have left there getting things organized for your replacement. If you make the transition as easy as possible on your boss, there's no reason she should begrudge you leaving!
