College graduation is always bittersweet, and this year's class might say they are experiencing more bitter than sweet as they enter a weak job market. However, college graduates are collectively better off than those who didn't complete higher education. Times are tough for new grads, but don't go taking those diplomas for granted. In Austria, not all college degrees will help you get a job in ANY place. We have a different educational system where lots of people go into a sort of "appreticeship" programme for 3 years to train for very specific jobs and depending on what you do, they get hired more often than people in the same field with a broader university education...

my husband and i were just talking about this at breakfast. are there any stats on employment by degree received? i would think that an engineering degree would show a higher employment rate than say a political science degree.

News like this makes me anxious... I just graduated two weeks ago! I hope having a BSB might give me a little bit of an advantage.

Yeah...this college degree thing still totally doesn't seem like it's paying off. A BA/BS is fast becoming the minimum requirement for many jobs, but to actually excel, you've got to get in a *professional* degree. The ones in healthcare and medicine [MD, PharmD, DDS, etc] pay off really well. I graduated from college a year ago, and with my major, I couldn't find a job that would allow me to decently pay bills and save some money for grad school. So I lived at home and focused all my energy on grad school apps. I'm getting ready to go back for a MSI...it's more of a professional degree, and the school has a great record of making the work pay off in a good-salaried job - I hope it will be the same for me! The investment better be worth it!

I feel your pain, Urban. I have yet to see any financial return from my degree. I graduated 2 years ago, and I am still making the same amount that I did when I was in college. It is extremely frustrating.

I earned my Master's two years ago, and I work three part time jobs. I hope things change. I know change won't come immediately, but I hope in the near future it does.
