How-To: Leave a Job Gracefully
Most of us are so worried about the economy and layoffs that job hopping is the last thing on our minds, but there are hundreds of reasons you might leave your current position. If you are one of the lucky employees who finds a new, better position or simply decides to move on from your current job, take heed. It's tempting to sign up for a new adventure without closing up your current one, but following standard etiquette can go a long way. Here are some suggestions for leaving your current workplace with class, grace, and your dignity intact.

i would love more advice on this topic...i'm not leaving just yet, but i've been with my company for six years and my husband and i have been thinking, seriously, of moving once our lease is up (february), out of state...i realize that this seems like a perfectly acceptable reason to leave a job, but i've been getting more responsibility and even the potential for a promotion (the position doesn't even exist at my particular location currently)...i'm excited about the opportunities, but consumed with anxiety at least once a week about feeling as if i'm "lying" to my boss because i'm accepting more work, but planning to leave within a year...what is the appropriate amount of notice? it's the same company i have been with since graduating college, so i feel like it's more than just a job and would owe much more than 2 weeks notice
1jelibeann. If it were me I would not feel guilty. Your company and boss doesn't tell you everything so you shouldn't have to tell them everything. Some things in life should be just for you, otherwise how would you have a sense of self? I think its great that you care a lot but you shouldn't feel guilty for wanting to move on eventually.
Continue to do a good job and continue to learn, sometimes we learn things at our current job that we eventually use at a future job but we don't see it until later. When the time comes to leave this job, I suggest that you give more than 2 weeks notice. Give them a month or two, maybe three months notice.
