I dont think it hurts. I work with a lot of male volunteers with an organization that works with young boys and though I dont flirt with them I think they respond better to women.

I am in a technical position in a place full of geeks and nerds. The fact that some of us have good daily hygiene already places us ahead of some others. ;) I definitely didn't get as far as I did based on sex appeal. I usually don't wear makeup, have my hair up in a ponytail, and wear jeans & t-shirts to work. I will admit that I have gotten my way once or twice because my boss seemed to treat women employees better.
