Have You Ever Job Searched at Work?

in the past i've looked at listings, but searching for a job at work is kind of not the right way to go about things unless you're looking to get fired before you find something else.

I've done it before just because my internet connection at home isn't as fast! Oh man that's bad.

All the time. Especially now since my employer has hinted signs of layoffs.

Not really, but while at my last job, a friend of mine IMed me and suggested a job to me -- that I ultimately applied for and got!

absolutely. considering looking for a job is almost a fulltime job in itself, when else will I have time!!!!???

I had a job a few years ago that wasn't so great; if I had been fired I would not have been disappointed one bit. I was openly searching for a job at work and taking time off to go to interviews, and making sure it was known that I was doing this so they could start the search for someone to replace me. After all that, when I gave notice my boss was extremely surprised that I was leaving.

If I was leaving my current job though, I wouldn't do it though.

I usually look around, but I haven't left this one yet. Before I got out of the Navy, I used my downtime at work to job search for sure.

Yeah of course. I'm a temp and contract out to a third party company (two times removed) they dont care what I do as long as im there.

And we are about two weeks away from hearing if our whole office is fired, so yeah course!

My last job was so awful that I was on Career Builder and Craigslist all the time looking for jobs (and sending out resumes - even using their fax machine, haha). Towards the end, I didn't even care if other coworkers (even the CEO) caught me or how bad it looked, I just wanted out!

Why yes I have. As did my bosses and everyone else I have ever worked with. My former boss- the VP of our company actually left during the day to go to an interview for another position.

She told me where she was going in case her daughter's school called but told me to tell everyone in the department and the CEO that she was going to meet a vendor.

At my old job, I knew I would be losing my position by a certain date, so I started jobhunting ahead of time. The sad thing was that just about everyone else in my department was also looking for a new job as well. We actually spent a lot of time "group" job-hunting where we'd find job postings for each other and stuff like that.

Oh yes. At one point the company was going out of business so I had maybe 90 minutes of work time and the rest was a free for all where all of us took turns going to interviews, reading each others' resumes and looking into details on different jobs.

I have to admit to doing it a few times, although I try not to let anything "extra curricular" cut into my work time, including my personal e-mail. I'm a researcher, so generally it happens when I'm browsing or searching on a website for an organization or company in a similar field. It's difficult not to click on the "Jobs" link.
