Have You Ever Had Something Stolen?

Arriving to a broken-in apartment after Thanksgiving break during college was an overwhelmingly violating feeling. Laptop? Gone. DVD collection? Vanished.

It was upsetting to me and my roommates that someone had forcefully entered our apartment and made our lives harder by having to buy replacement items, but we understood they were just things and felt lucky nobody was hurt. Have you ever had the unfortunate experience of someone stealing from you?

I had my bag stolen which had my passports, drivers licence, my bank books, my keys, memorial cards of family members who are deceased, and wait for it $20,000 in cash that needed to be deposited into the bank that day. I was set up and the police just couldn't care less. To make matters worse the robbery was captured on CCTV and when I put in a request to get a copy of the video the police wouldn't allow me to have it because of "privacy" violations. The police can stick it as far as I'm concerned. If I had an image of that guy who stole my personal possessions and money you bet that I would be plastering his image all over the place. Nobody is safe from robbery and I'm fed up with it. I've read through everyone's comments here and we are all victims of crime. Only when the crime turns to murder is when the cops want to get involved, otherwise forget it. Should we be carrying guns around to protect ourselves?

In fourth grade I had my good pair of glasses stolen out of my gym bag at a track meet. I was so ticked. My spare pair made me feel like a nerd. When I was seven at target this random five year old girl ran up and snatched my poodle purse out of my hands and ran off. On the way out I was crying and my dad saw that girl with her mom holding the purse. I got it back so ha ha little brat. At five years old my family's house was robbed. They were wanting money and the only money they saw was my five bucks. Wow. Last year the same boy kept on stealing my fruit snacks and my twice a month soda. This year I've about had it! My parents invited my ex friend over and she stole my new nail polish, a necklace and my fruit scented hi lighters. I'm at a new school now. Someone stole my Nintendo DSi out of my back pack. They didn't steal my cell phone though. I always have to go somewhere after school so I keep those things with me.

NEVER EVER TO TO ROME, I had my back pack stolen whilst in Rome and in there I had an antique rosary but most of all was my camera which had all my holiday photos on it - I had lost all my honeymoon pictures and still morn their loss even though it was 18months ago - I would never go to Rome again, which is sad as I am a catholic and was hoping to visit the Vatican on my trip, but just ended up on seeing the inside of the british embassy as all my travel docs were also in my back pack!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes but nothing of extreme value, an empty wallet once (which I found rather humourous) and cd's of course. Thats all I can think of.

Not me personally. The house I lived in when I was a teenager got broken into, though. They stole my mom's jewelry and that's it.

my purse was stolen from my car at my old work last year. i didn't have a locker there so i'd always through my purse under my passenger side seat. well, either i forgot to do that or i didn't do it well and someone bashed in my passenger side window and grabbed it. they only got a few bucks, and i cancelled my checks and cards before they could use it, but my social security card was in there by accident (i had needed it a few weeks earlier and had forgotten to take it out.) i haven't had any problems with identity/credit theft yet but that's something that's gonna stay with me for awhile ya know? and it was a super cute purse i had found on clearance at urban outfitters, so i was never able to replace it. plus, the timing really sucked. i discovered it the evening before my last college final, which was at 7:45am. i freaked out and my dad drove up to school, switched cars with me, then drove my car with the broken window 80 miles back home to get it fixed. gotta love dads :)

Someone stole my Beanie Babies in 4th grade. They returned the little bag I had them in, but stuffed it full of old hats and gloves from the lost-and-found. Isn't it sad that people do stuff like this to each other?

A cautionary tale: Never put anything valuable in checked luggage! Someone in the St. Paul/Minneapolis airport's Transport Security Admininstration (those federally-employed luggage handlers/screeners) stole my brand new Macbook (lost that entire year's pictures :-( ) and a flawless 2 carat emerald-cut aquamarine set in a 18k yellow gold bezel setting. It was the most beautiful ring I've ever seen (still), and was sentimental too because my mom got it for me on our big vacation together in Thailand. It was SO STUPID to have that stuff in my suitcase, I realize, but I thought it would be OK because only TSA was to handle it. But no, it was an inside job. They exploited the fact that since 9/11 we can't have locks on our luggage. I'm sure it's a nice little scheme they have going there. . . At the time I was absolutely devastated, sickened, and angry, and it's been several years but I'm still FURIOUS when I think about it. Now, I never put anything remotely valuable in checked luggage, even if it means having to haul around a much heavier carryon bag.

I was robbed in my studio apartment once when I was sleeping. they took my handbag, my mates wallet with his plane tickets and walked straight past us on the way out. That was scary. My car was broken into along with five other cars in my building. It was locked and in a locked garage. I had my $5000 stereo stolen (it won awards and everything) along with my laptop which i lost two weeks of work on :( I was absolutely gutted as my stereo was the one thing I really loved. I still miss that stereo :(

My house was broken into just LAST week! We have a security system and a 95lb golden retriever, but he still got my front window up without breaking the glass. Many lights were on in the house, as well, as the front porch light, because my husband was pulling an all-nighter at work. My dog and I were upstairs asleep with fans running so we didn't hear anything. He got my laptop and purse, which contained my walled (with all my bank cards), 2 check books, a digital camera, my cell phone, diabetes supplies and my car and house key. What we can't figure out is why he didn't take the 30-or-so DVDs on top of the tv OR why he didn't walk into the dining room to grab my husband's laptop. If he did, he would have set off the motion detectors!!!!!!!!! We have a suspect in mind but can't prove anything. He used my debit card for $100 in gas, but I don't have to pay for it, thankfully. The insurance company is another problem, though, don't get me started.

I've had a ton of stuff stolen over the years. Sadly, it would be an extremely long list. The worst was when my house was broken into...they took all of my jewelry, credit cards, checkbook and one pillowcase from my favorite sheet set which I assume was to carry the stuff they pilfered! Arrgh!! 2 years later and I'm still getting phone calls from different police stations around town letting me know they found some of my property on someone they've arrested. ARRGH!

I had my CD player yanked out of my car a few years ago when I still lived at home. I didn't even have the doors locked! Thats how secure I felt in my hometown. They also went into my brother's car, but couldn't get the CD player out (because it had not been manually installed). So, they decided to settle for the spare change in the cup holders. Give me a freaking break! Who is so desperate that they LITERALLY nickle and dime someone?!?! ugh.

My home was broken in back during summer '03. The culprit came thru a bathroom window I forgot to close and stole my Bose radio, digital camera, $500 dollars I kept in lingerie drawer (ugh!) and even food from my fridge was gone :rant: !! I felt so violated that some stranger was in my home and went thru my stuff. I have since installed a home security system.

I've had 2 cars stolen, both recovered and one was recovered and it was stripped down and deemed totaled by the insurance company!

My apartment was broken into. I came home to an unlocked door (I just thought I forgot to lock it) and discovered I had several things missing from my apartment, including a piggy bank I had since I was an infant. But, whomever broke in wasn't very smart because they missed a lot of good jewelry, cash on my dining room table, and a brand new DVD player still in its box.Regardless, I felt extremely violated and overwhelmed. I am extra careful about everything in my house now before I leave it.
