Real estate prices are declining in most places, but I would bet the towns that are home to universities are seeing prices drop less than towns that don't have an educational economy. Higher education jobs have been hanging on through the recession, and real estate in the towns where these schools are located is directly correlated to their existence.
Forbes determined the 20 most educated towns in the US, and noted that because college graduates and people with graduate degrees make substantially more per year than those with high school diplomas alone, highly educated residents serve to increase the median incomes in the towns in which they reside. I'm not surprised that three are D.C. suburbs.
Although, I'm not sure I would consider most of these "small towns."
1I was going to say the same thing Lil! It's the same as DC really though, definitely not "small town"
2I read the article and it said that "small towns" are cities with 20,000-65,000 people. That's such a big range!
And yeah, I pretty much consider Bethesda part of DC, too. I know it's technically not, but I kind of lump them together.
3Bethesda is like a faux-city. It's not horrendously small though, but it's not too big. I would say people can underestimate how big Bethesda is because the biggest parts are the back roads and stuff. A lot of people consider downtown as all Bethesda is, but downtown is fairly small. However, Bethesda is awesome with awesome people, and I miss it immensely. Yes, I lived there. The rest, some places I have been, but I wouldn't consider them "small towns" either. They are pretty average.

6knowing the schools that are near DC (with diplomat's kids and all) that kind of makes sense to me.
7I would imagine University Park is pretty damn educated... SMU is there, afterall.
8Umm. I don't consider the majority of these to be small towns by any stretch of the imagination.
9yeah...um, those are all suburbs or urban areas with large, wealthy universities. I think they need to differentiaate between "small town" and suburb.
