Your Office Job May Decrease Your Life Span

Who knew sitting all day would shorten your life? According to NPR, in a study held by the University of South Carolina, professor Steven Blair found that men who are sedentary for more than 23 hours a week have 64 percent more chance of dying from heart disease than those who are sedentary for less than 11 hours. "Those who were sitting more were substantially more likely to die," Blair says. The research also found that people who sit more had higher "cholesterol, blood sugar, triglycerides and even waist size."

Since many of you spend your nine to five at your desk, you might want to reconsider the activities you indulge in when you get home. TV watching, surfing the web, and playing video games are all relaxing activities, but they'll cause you to sit even longer, which would in turn shorten your life span. Even if you have a regular exercise routine, that's not going to be enough to beat the negative effects of sitting all day, says the research.

Experts recommend employees get their blood flowing and move around for a few minutes every hour at work. I'm not sure what my co-workers would think if I suddenly start doing jumping jacks in the middle of the office, but I'll definitely try taking a brisk walk down the hallway more often.
