Do You Split the Grocery Store Bills?

The ever increasing cost of living means it's getting harder and harder to shave grocery store bills and families are turning to drastic measures like stockpiling food in an effort to save money. Do you divide up your grocery store bills with your roommates or fella or do you pay for your own stash of snacks, staples and treats?

My boyfriend and I trade off on who pays for groceries and dining out. We were roommates before we were a couple (these things happen...) and I think once we started dating, we started sharing food expenses. I have another friend who actually opened a joint checking account with his significant other, and both of them contribute a certain amount to that account each month, and they use the account to pay for those sorts of shared expenses. I wouldn't mind doing that (it makes things seem a bit more fair) but I don't really want to get nit-picky about a dollar here or there.

My boyfriend buys all the groceries unless I run out to get him a certain spice or milk. He also cooks every single night! I won the jackpot!

The majority of the time, I spend for myself but my roommates and I are really close so if one of pays for all it doesn't really matter.

My honey and I contribute an equal sum of money to a joint bank account, from which we pay rent, bills and groceries. Personal stuff (cosmetics, clothes, cigarettes - his not mine!) with our own money.

Technically, I live at home while I'm finishing grad school, so I don't have to worry about food there. But I'm at my bf's more often than not, and he's very generous about paying for most groceries and restaurant meals. I don't mind grabbing some things at the store as needed, or paying for a meal, though. He just makes a LOT more money than I do, and is very kind about taking care of me!

It usually takes us about 5 minutes to figure out who is going to buy what. But it does usually come out fair.

my boyfriend makes more $$ than me, so he's usually the one to buy groceries, but i do stop at the store when there are things that i specifically want so that i'm paying for some of it

My fiance and I have an interesting way of working things out... He buys dinner whenever we go out together; basic necessities like canned goods, cereals, and stuff that only he eats; and pays for the electric bill. I buy groceries when I cook food we don't have sitting around the apartment (I haven't had to buy ground beef in over a year, thanks to his hunting prowess! Deer works in everything!), and pay for the cable/internet. I think it ends up pretty even, since I cook three nights a week at about twenty dollars a meal.

When I lived with my boyfriend, I did the grocery shopping and just switched from my credit card to his every other time. It was so easy, we loved all the same food! I moved back to live with my family to save money while I attend law school, and they are hamburger helper/hot dog/velveeta cheese types of people, while I am a vegetarian used to eating organic food and drinking pellegrino. So, I do all my grocery shopping, there is no mistaking my food for theirs, and we do family dinners once a week, which they cook and pay for :). Either way, I've never had to nitpick either. I like to share!

Its weird in my household because its like we both pay. We are engaged and we have a household account and our seperate accounts. We each put a certain percentage of money in the household account everymonth so anything that we need for the household or that will benefit us both, we pay for it out of the household account.

my fiance and i split our shared groceries in half, but i'll pay for the things that only i use, and vice versa.

I just give a lump sum once a month to the folks but I think I might start giving them a bit more with the cost of everything going up!!!

we (boyfriend) don't split exactly down the middle or anything, we take turns paying for our big shopping trips. in between big trips we'll pick up what ever we need. we don't pay too much attention to it, but it's pretty even.

When the grocery stores do 2 for 1 sales, I've split the items and the tab with friends who are interested it the offered items. Also, if 5 lb bags of things like onions, oranges and apples are on sale. I could never use those up before they would go bad. If you couple that with coupons, it can really save a bundle!

I do 95% of the food buying, whether at the store or at a restaurant. My husband gets most of the other household expenses, so it works out.

I usually buy all household and shared stuff (cleaning supplies, toothpaste, shampoo), as well as small to medium grocery runs (only as much as I can carry myself - no car). He comes along to pay and help lug things for the more infrequent larger grocery runs.

when i first moved in with my roommate - we split the bill. but then it got difficult for me because not only was she eating everything before i can even get to it - but it seemed like i was always the one buying groceries and sometimes i wasn't getting paid back... it just made more sense for us to share the condiments but we buy our own groceries - that way i always knew what i had and needed.

We usually rotate or it depends on who got paid most recently. We don't nitpick about that sort of thing, whoever has money, pays. We go a few times a month it usually works out

hmmm I live at home so my parents pay for the groceries, in a month or two I'll be on my own so I'll be paying 100% of the cost. hah!

I do all of the shopping and pick up the tab for all groceries, unless we're hosting a party (then it's 50/50). In return, my guy pays for the equivalent $$$ amount in utility bills. He's a nightmare to take to the store so I like it this way!! :)
