When it comes to gift giving, I pride myself in picking practical and thoughtful gifts that are in an appropriate price range and generally pay little attention to how much I think someone will spend on me unless there's a spending cap.
However, I have a dear friend who plans her Christmas gifts for her siblings based on what she thinks they will spend on her. This year she shared that she gives her fancy-pants brother pricier gifts because she knows he will fork out more on her and spends less on her brother who gives less decadent presents.
Do you have a similar gift giving attitude, and how did you make out today?

We kept all the gifts small this year, so everyone spent close to the same amount, but my dear Grandma told us (insisted, actually) that we NOT give her anything and then gave us a very generous cash gift, so we ended up getting a little more than we gave. It was a nice holiday, though...it's almost better when we don't try to outdo one another with gifts.
1my family goes a bit overboard. so i get pretty spoiled over the holidays. i would give them more, but i just can't afford it. and they realize that, so i don't feel bad.
2It was pretty much equal. My family does a family gift exchange, one family buys a gift for one family and another family buys them a gift. Also my parents, brother and I give eachother gifts. We set price limits because we all know that some can afford more than others.
3Since I have a kid, I gave him more than I got in return (except his thanks).
4I think it was pretty equal this year, with the scale probably leaning more towards getting more than I gave. Hubby and I still went over our budget but, that's OK. It comes with the holidays. Our families are also aware that we really can't afford spending so much so they're really not expecting "decadent" gifts.
5I gave more. I don't ask for much because I have people around me that just don't know how to buy good gift.
6Some people are only good gift givers when they buy other people gift cards for a present.
7I think this year was pretty even for me. I gave the immediate members of my family one gift and one stocking stuffer (except for Dad, he got a gift, no stocking), and a gift for my dog, but I got a lot more than I gave from Grandma, and I think Mom and I were pretty equal in giving and receiving gifts.
8I got one extremely expensive gift that I was not expecting from my father which combined with the many small other gifts made thing about the same, unless you count what I spent on my boyfriend. Then I got less than I gave his gift alone was over $500.
9It was a tight X-mas for us, but between my parents and grandparents we got WAY more than we gave. That makes me sad. It will be remedied in 2010.
10We definitely gave a ton more than we received.
11Gave more.
