Daylighters are workers who manage to work two jobs during one shift. Sure, most of us wear many hats in our jobs, but daylighters actually perform tasks for two different businesses while physically present at just one of them. Some of these career jugglers perform tasks for their secondary job with the permission of their boss at their primary job, but most hide the fact from their employers.

If you're considering taking on responsibilities of another job while you're on the clock, be prepared to work long hours. Founder of HR.com Debbie McGrath says it is "acceptable to ask permission to perform other work during office hours, provided the time is made up."

A co-worker of mine manages to swing it, but I also think he works really hard to keep up with both jobs.
1I have considered proposing this to my boss. I work for a contractor to a very large company, however my job doesnt have enough to do to justify full time.
I have considered proposing that I work part time for each company if it should come to it that they only need me part time.
I wouldnt do it without the boss's permission though.
In the past, I have run my own business and worked full time (50hrs a week) which was tough but worth it!
2i know that it's not necessarily the right thing to do but sometimes i feel like it would be good for me to have the income of another position if i could swing it, but i don't know what i would be able to do. i can understand that it's not ethical and all that - but in today's economy i can see the reason why a lot of people would feel like they had to do this.
do you think that it's more the types of jobs that people have when they work at call centers or something like that?
3I would also like to see jobs as well. I have been looking like crazy for a second job but I haven't heard anything back. I hope by the end of October to have a second job.
4I'd never thought about something like this... it seems it would really depend on your boss/company.
Anyone know what type of work this is normally???
5That seems like dangerous waters to me. I guess it depends on the industry, but I can't imagine any of my old bosses being thrilled with me doing another job, while on the job.
