Nominated for: Best actor — Les Misérables
On having a back-up plan as a journalist: "I was always one of those people who didn't know what I wanted to do, and when I studied acting, that's the first time I felt I loved it. But I wasn't a kid, either. When it happened, I was a realist and knew that 98 percent of actors don't do this. I just didn't want to be the last guy at the party, and I didn't want to be, like, 45 years old and still like, 'Hey, do you know anyone who can give me . . . ?' So I thought if it didn't work out, I would just go and do something else."
