Brilliant or Baffling: Man Sells Tattoos as Ad Space on Leg

People do some crazy and creative things for cash, and New Zealander James Stewart has taken advertising to new extremes. He's offering tattoos for NZ$500 per square centimeter; sponsors will choose artwork from the art community website ArtKlick.co.nz to serve as inspiration for the tattoos, and for each design used he'll pay the artist NZ$1,000.

His goal is to raise NZ$1 million (£384,000), donate NZ$50,000 to ArtKlick and NZ$50,000 to charity, and use the rest to start two new businesses.

Gotta be down for the cause (New Zealand art). I think working for 20 years on $50,000 salary is a far crazier way to earn $1,000,000 :)

Hey guys, thanks for the interest and comments - it's cool to see what people think. Just to let you know, this is more of a stunt to promote New Zealand art to the world than me making money - I am going to give a lot of it away anyway. I couldn't think of a cooler tattoo than a collage of New Zealand artwork - so why not switch the traditional paying for advertising on its head and get paid to advertise?! I had been reading a lot of guerrilla marketing blogs and the idea just popped into my head when I was half asleep last Saturday morning - did the press release on Wednesday and got international coverage by Friday! I believe Lays did this many years ago before the I Gotta Have A Tattoo fad came around. Not brilliant unless it removable, but then it's not a tattoo. No thank you.

Heh, baffling. It's definitely not as intuitive as pixel advertisement some years ago. What's he going to do in the winter months? For $500, if I were to buy ad space, my ad on that leg better be exposed at all times he's outside.
