Workers at blood donor centers and pet food banks have identical comments about the increase of people entering their facilities — the new faces are from all walks of life and represent a cross-section of society. The director of one donor center in New Mexico commented, "All walks of people come in to donate," she said. "We have teachers, students, people who work for the city. We're definitely seeing a change in who is walking through the door, but they're all saying the same thing. They all say they need a little extra cash to pay for gas."
Similarly, the executive director at a pet food bank in Santa Cruz said, "In the past, the demographics has been people who are disabled or on disability and senior citizens. Nowadays, during the pet food program, I see people who are able-bodied and not able to find a job.'' The pet food bank she runs, which typically provides about 5,000 pounds of free pet food each month, has seen a 20 percent demand increase in the past six months.

There is a blood bank by my work. There are always lines at the door in the morning when I drive by.
1Some places pay, I wonder how much do you get for the "donation".
2I think it's a great thing to do, but I don't get why the economy would make people want to donate more blood? For the free juice?
I love the idea of a pet food bank, I think that's just great.
3As I was driving in to work listening to the radio, there was a report on how people are getting rid of their cats and dogs and other animals because they can't afford to feed or maintain them due to the economy. A representative from a local pound is helping by donating animal food and providing certain medical needs for free. I can't remember the city but this official stated that this city's pound is overpopulated and they don't want to resort in euthanizing the animals.
4i wonder if IL (Chicago) or DC has such a program. i could use the extra cash. and i'm pretty certain that my bone marrow, right now anyway, is healthy enough to make more blood..
5I didn't think people got paid for donating blood...I am obviously going to the wrong places...or doing it for a different reason. Donating costs me since I feel that I deserve some sort of treat for my good deed.
6In order to get paid in WA you have to donate plasma, and that takes about 45 min. to do. and I think you get $20
7My mom called me last night to check on me and she asked if I had enough money to pay for cat food. She had heard a similar story on the news where ppl were just letting their animals go (into the wild) because they couldn't afford to keep and feed them. I had to reassure her that the kittehs are well fed.
8I've never heard of a pet food bank...I would love to donate to that. What a great idea.
9This is too sad that people don't have the money to take care of their pets.
I sincerely hope
this never happens to me.
10I wouldn't call it donating if you're getting paid to have plasma taken from you. That's not really being a volunteer. I'd call it selling!
11Santa Cruz is one of the most expensive places to live and one where the market is hurting, too! Paying $1200 for a 300 sq.ft. apartment, it's no wonder people can't feed their pets.
