Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but any guy who has purchased an engagement ring will tell you he feels pretty darn chummy with it, too. While it truly is all about the sentiment and promise, the perfect cut, clarity, and stone are certainly factors and come at a high price. Most of us don't have a celebrity-sized bank account or unlimited credit at Tiffany & Co., so what was the average spent on bling in 2009? Take this quiz and find out.

The ring I want costs a little under $300 and it's breath taking. I've seen lots of women wearing their engagement rings that spent tons more for their rings and their rings look very cheap and ugly compared to the ring I want that costs a lot less. Another store was selling the same ring that I want for about $500. You just gotta knew where to look and shop around a bit.

My ring costs w/ my wedding band $40,000. Its not huge (2c) but it is handmade, will be passed on for lifetime after lifetime, design was drawn by my husband, and it is perfect and I love it. It took a whole team of people to make this. 40,000 might seem crazy but he saved it up when we met to make a ring from scratch for me. It's the effort and thought over years that went into it and that someone loves me that much to make a ring from just his thoughts.

I don't know why people get so hooked up on the BIG diamond ring..... I was fortunate enough to receive a beautiful 4ct ring from my husband 2 years ago, but what really matters is the love!!! Anyway, it's not only about size but also the quality of the diamond.... And in the end of the day, even if you don't get a diamond, the important part is the love... The diamond won't love you and make you feel better after a rough day.....

My ring cost $15,000 and it is beautiful. My fiance bought it with money from his stocks- he loves it as much as I do. We couldn't find anything else we liked better and he could (kind of) afford it. What you want to spend on an engagement ring is a personal decision- there is no "right" or "wrong" answer.

My rings are appraised at over $3,000 but they were free to my husband & I - a gift from his grandparents. His great-grandmother wore them. To me, they are priceless. Oh yeah, and I paid $60 for his ring.

I wouldn't want my boyfriend to go over 5,500. While it's a lot you have to remember you only buy it once (unless you lose it!) and you are (supposed to be) with that person your entire life. When I point out the rings that are 5 he says thats a down payment for a car. lmao.

I wonder if that price reflects the actual COST of the average engagement ring, or how much was spent last year on average? I love jewelry, and if my future hubby wants to be a little extravagant with my ring, that is awesome (since I plan on wearing and cherishing it for the rest of my life)! BUT if not, I am cool too! For me, it is more about the thought put into picking out the ring than the actual price!

I totally agree with smart blonde. It's not that a more expensive ring means he loves you more or whatever--it's a piece of jewelry you will wear every single day of your life until the day you die. It's important that it's exactly what you want and you will look at it every day and feel happy about it.

I made Mr. Blonde read every book in the local library about diamond buying before we got engaged. As a result, he paid X amount and the ring was appraised for much more. I told him that I didn't care if the wedding was just us in Vegas with an Elvis impersonator officiating, but I was going to wear the ring every day and I wanted something quality. He did well. I did even better :)

Both my engagement ring and his wedding ring were free - they were gifted by his parents. I wasn't 100% fond of the ring when I first got it - mostly because it's gold and I didn't like wearing gold at the time, but also because I just didn't wear much "grown up" jewelry so it wasn't my style. To put it simply, it's very, VERY shiny and attention-grabbing, which I was not used to. However, I did not want him spending the little money we had on a ring and I've grown from just liking it to absolutely loving it, so I couldn't be happier with his mother's ring. I made sure to get the simplest gold band I could find that would still look good alone, but wouldn't look gaudy with the engagement ring - which also saved us a ton of cash (the band was under $150). As for how much his parents spent on it originally? I have no clue - but it wasn't cheap, that's for sure! I hope to pass it down to one of our kids some day. Even if they don't like the style, they can set the diamonds in something different to save a little cash themselves. :)

Sounds about right. The ring I want is about 3-4k, but my Aunt manages a jewelery store so I would get a discount (about half that). I'm not a huge fan of expensive things. I don't own a single high end article of clothing (Levis, Old Navy, and Forever 21 are my buddies). I'm not into shoes, I'm not into nice cars, I'm not in to video games, but a nice ring means a lot to me. Nothing big, just "perfect" for my finger.

I have a nice-sized diamond that was passed down in my husband's family, but I don't treasure it nearly as much as the silver band he bought me in Cancun for $40 that I wear every day. It's tied to some VERY good memories.

I think the suggestion used to be 2 months, but in the last 10 years or so, it's gone to 3. I really don't see the point in spending so much money on a ring, but to each their own. Being given a $25,000 ring doesn't mean somebody loves me any more or any less, although I do see how it might mean they were willing to put forth effort to save money to get me something that expensive. I don't know... showy symbols don't really do it for me, I guess.

Isn't there a "rule of thumb" that you should spend 3 monthly salaries on an engagement ring? I think $5,487 is less than three times the the average income. So, let's propose a new rule that calls for twice the monthly salary. Maybe then guys won't feel as much pressure to keep up with the demands and go even lower on average. - Sorry, if I offend any ladies with this suggestion but I think a sensible approach to money is a better indicator about the success of marriage than a big engagement ring.

Isn't the standard three months' salary for an engagement ring? That seems like a good rule, it's a special occasion and very symbolic so why not? Though I definitely understand being on a budget or spending less.

I'd be happy with a cracker jack box ring, and I hope my boyfriend knows this. For some reason he thinks jewelry is the fail-proof gift, but I'm much higher maintenance than that. I want thought, not money.

Well, my husband (then boyfriend) earned his money, and so he decided how to spend it. He decided to buy his intended (me) her dream ring (which I never thought I would ever own because it's an extravagant piece) . He could afford it (without going into debt), and that's what he wanted to buy.

everyone has their indulgences, some are more then others and some are less...I don't think its fair to tell people that they all have to conform and spend ONE set price on an engagement ring. everyones different, and if you feel strongly someone is over-indulgent when they can afford it then maybe you are just jealous?

just because you can afford it doesn't mean it's still okay to buy an extravagant piece of jewelry that really doesn't house, clothe, or drive you anywhere.

My diamond alone was over $10k, and that was 13 years ago. that's just what people in our circle spent. And we had a condo and all the "things" you need to run a household, so it wasn't as if he couldn't afford it.
