News Flash: Americans Going to Mexico For Dental Work

Hmmm...This is interesting. It might be cheaper in Mexico but is it safe? That would worry me.

I have a cousin who is a doctor in Jaliso and my parents go there ALL THE TIME cuz he has the hookup with the dentists, plastic surgeons, pediatrics, etc...u name it, he can get in contact with any doctor, any time. It's so different there. Everything is super cheap, quick and straight to the point. They don't *baby* you the way they do in America. But the healing process is amazing and the results are better than what'd ever have expected.

But this is me and I have family out there....don't do this without getting information. The best places to go are to the Universities, because that's where ALL the good doctors are....NOT THE STUDENTS, the instructors...the ACTUAL doctors. They're the best. They can always refer you to a great doc.

My sister in law is from Peru and always save any of her dental work for when she goes back there. It is so much cheaper down there for the dental work and the prescription meds. And several of those that are prescription here are OTC there.

Amazing the cost difference, I wonder why we inflate everything here so much? I think it would be just as safe as getting your dental work here in the US --it all depends on who you go to and their reputation. You do not want to go to someone for surgery and you know nothing about them, their practice, or work.

My dental insurance pays 80% for any "major" issues, everything else (office visits, x-rays, teeth cleaning) is free.

I am not going to truck my hiney down to Mexico and risk being worked on by an unlicensed dentist.

We're New Yorkers who found ourselves in San Antonio for 4 years, and the dental costs there were a fraction of what we'd been paying. Now we're back in New York but figure we'll go to the guy we found in Texas to get any major work done.

Mexico actually has really good doctors! I have a friend who lives in Mexico (upper-class) and she referred me to a really great oral surgeon that is like surgeon to the super rich. My insurance won't pay for my jaw surgury since I do not have TMJ. The rates are super low! Seems kinda silly to go there for general cleanings unless you live on a border town.

Mexico's medical program is actually more specialized than USA's so feel assured but make sure you know who you are going to.

Well, my insurance pays for most of my dental expenses. With the cost of plane tickets and the entire hassle, I don't think it's worth it.

part of the reason costs are so high is because of the malpractice insurance that has to be purchased.

I wouldn't want to go to another country for medical work.

If something goes wrong, you have to deal with the other places laws, and no doctor here in the US would want to fix something that they didn't mess up in the first place.

well i have fam that lives here in the US and when they go to vacation in mexico to see my grandparents they also go to the doctors for bloodwork and dentistry. so it kills two birds with one stone but i can't imagine waiting until my vacation even if it is cheaper. plus sometimes you need to be keep going back- make sure meds are working, or to complete the procedure (my aunt went to mexico to get braces but had a hard time finding an dentist in the states who would take her on as a patient since they had not put the braces on her).

then sometimes it takes a while to get the correct diagnosis. my mom went to get diagnosed for her sudden dramatic weight loss and they said she was perimenopausal (which is true) but they gave her birth control and totally missed some other things. when she came back and got some government assistance and went to her PCP they diagnosed her with diabetes and that she had TB exposure! she is doing great now and was told that the birth control pills should have never been given to her. it angers me that we live in a country where it is so expensive to be healthy and the only way you can get an answer is in the ER (after a long wait) and even then it is practically too late to have a choice in treatments and they smile at you as they try to talk to you to get your information to bill you before you ae discharged.

i guess you need to be in almost perfect health before you go but if you were why would you go?

that's insane to thin that for something like dental work you would go to mexico. does the cost of traveling not outweigh the price relief?

let's face it, some people dont have health insurance and if they're visiting family out in Mexico, why not? Not everyone is fortunate enough to have an insurance plan that pays for EVERYTHING.

As far as cost, we travel any other time besides xmas, spring break and summer, and the flights are super cheap.

It's my second home to me. I dont recommend this to EVERYONE. I just want people to know that not all Doctors in Mexico run their practice out of a shack. That's such a stereotype.

Same thing here! United States has good doctors and bad doctors....just like EVERYWHERE else.

I heard about this. I think there was an article in the Times? Anyhow, I have insurance, but I need to get my wisdom teeth out and am having problems finding an oral surgeon who takes insurance. I've definitely considered it.

Do you guys go to dentists here?? I have awesome insurance and last year i have 2 root canals and two crowns and it was over 3300 dollars! I had to pay 1400 of it out of pocket!
Thats crazy! My dad meanwhile was going to get his front teeth all capped and in the US ( he was in Los Angeles) it was 1,000 per tooth. He crossed over to Mexico and got the entire job done, top and bottom front teeth for 4,500. 14 teeth.
He was close enough to drive... but 14k to 4500.. Id pay for the plane tickets for that difference.

omg... Mexico is not all deserty and guitar playing and cantina drinking as you see in the movies you know?

people from Europe and the US come to study Medicine here because we have some of the best schools and doctors here...

not to sound mean or anyhting, but we're not all effed up here... we may not be a first world country but we have some incredible professionals

I needed 3 root canals and crowns but I didn't have dental insurance or the money to pay for the dental work. I was actually considering treking down to Mexico to get my teeth fixed, but I found www.dentalplans.com while doing my research.

Luckily, I was able to save about $2500 on my dental care with my dental plan. It saved me from a 5 hour plane ride to Mexico!
