Going to work when you're feeling under the weather is sometimes unavoidable. In the spirit of sickly winter, I want to know if you're someone who saves their sick days for something other than the sniffles.

No way....Nor do I want others coming in sick! Stay at home!! I would rather pick up the slack for them than get their germs...
1I usually work for at least a little while from home when I am sick.
2unfortunately I have severe sinus infections most of the year and feel ill a good part of the year so I must go to work. I usually only call out when my I have a bug or food poisoning.
3citizenkane -- I agree with you 100%. It pisses me off so much when sick colleagues come to work. No one thinks you are a good soldier. Everyone is thinking - That Asshole/b*tch needs to go home before I catch the plague from him/her!
4If I weren't sick so often then I would call in sick more often.
5i stay home when im sick
6unless i HAVE to be there
but other then that... i stay in bed all day long!
I'll stay home if I have something really bad (flu) or that may be contagious otherwise I tough it out. I save my sick days up in case I need them for other things that are more serious than a cold.
7I don't often get sick, so I will call in sick when I am dehydrated and get an immobilizing headache from it. Usually the day after my late night soccer games. Or when its snowing and my "car can't get out"
8I don't call in too much but if I do I normally then work from home, unless I'm super sick then I just hibernate in bed.
9I've been sick all week and I've come into work every day. I'm not contagious, though.
I used to have no qualms about calling in sick, but now, even if I take one day off, the work backs up so much that it's not worth it. I'm allowed to work from home whenever I want, but when I work from home I end up sleeping on the couch or watching TV, so the work still gets done.
Basically, as long as I'm semi-functional and not contagious, I'll go into work. I'd rather save my PTO days for fun.
10I am sick and at work right now!
11I am lucky enough to be able to work from home when I am sick so I never have to use my PTO!
12ewells - I'm sick and working right now too! I don't have the kind of job that someone can else can do for me, and my clients would not be understanding about work getting done late.
13I'm a college student, but I definitely go to school when I'm sick.I figure that I'm paying for my classes; might as well get the most out of them, especially when it's superhard to play catch up.
14I try only to call in sick if I'm absolutely unable to get out of bed. I'm just too busy at work most days to even think about taking time off. Thankfully though, my office is really understanding though and everyone is a bit germophobic, so they tend to insist on taking the day off. And they pay us for all of our sick days!
15If I am contagious, I stay home. I would expect my co-workers to do the same out of respect for everyone.
16My job gives you the WORST guilt trips every time you try to call in. And now they've instituted this new policy where if you have a certain number of sick time incidents, you'll be fired. It's so obnoxious. But yet, when you're suckered into coming in anyway, they spray you down with Lysol and treat you like a leper. One of my resolutions this year is to stay home when I'm sick and not give a d*mn about the nasty comments people will inevitably make.
17I would much rather stay home, sleep, let my body heal and play catch-up for a little while, even if it means working a weekend day. That also makes it so that I am healthier faster. I would hate to come to work, be miserable and make mistakes that I would have to fix later and stay sick for days. And I agree with other people- be respectful STAY HOME when you are sick! No one wants your germs!!
18In the office where I used to work, the rules were that you have to have a doctor's note to get a sick day. Which kind of sucks because, come on, all you can do for a flu is get a lot of rest and drink a lot of water (I was actually told this by a doctor once, the first time I went to a doctor for a flu). Yet because of this rule, you have to haul your sick ass out of bed to either A) pay for a doctor to check you over and write you a note or B) wait miserably for hours at a free clinic. In the process, going out in public to infect more people and/or get more infected yourself.
You almost might as well just go to work. Unless you like your co-workers and want to keep them safe from your germs (which I did, hee).
And I'd also like to add that the boss from said office comes in while sick and he loves to hover over other people and breathe right down their neck while they work. "Luckily", he passed his germs to me right before the holidays so I didn't have to go through this whole arduous thing to get a sick day.
19I've actually never had to call in sick to work! I've never been sick enough to do that! If my nose is running, I just blow it at work. I guess though if I was really feeling crappy, I'd call in sick and then try to do a little bit of work from home if I felt up to it.
20I've called out once. I usually come in sick and if I get feeling really bad, I'll leave. But there are only 4 people in my office, so I feel like I really need to be here.
21Sometimes I am too busy to skip even when feeling sick - but I hate the idea of spreading my sickness to other people!
22i get anxiety about not going into work...although i have to say that i did work from home this week becuase i havea MONSTER cold and i'm sick as a dog. at least we are now in an era where you can be productive from home
23i find it very disrespectful when people go into work contagious and i think workplaces should be more respectful of that and not hassle people when they call in for being sick (and contagious). in the end people who come in sick to work are not taking care of themselves as they should and it catches up to them in the long run and they end up having to take off longer down the road. it is a vicious cycle. but i also understand that bosses are sometimes extremely unsympathetic to the plight. such a shame.
24I usually come in and tough it out.
25I have WAY too many responsabilities at my job to be sick all the time.
Only if I am really truely not feelign well will I call in sick...like today
I only call in if the doctor tells me I need to stay home otherwise I am here everyday. I do not get sick very often anyway. The last time I was really sick was 2 years ago but I had an office so I was the only breathing on myself.
26It depends how sick I am. If I think I can make it through the day, I'll probably come in and just stay away from everyone. I hate using up my PTO.
27I'm actually sick now for 4 days. I come in the morning to work, and let my boss ask me to go home. That has been working for me, she won't count as a leave.
28i'm weird
29when i'm physically sick i still go in
i like to save my sick days for days when my spirit is sick and i need a day of down time
My job is very deadline-centric and often, it doesn't matter how sick I am because I absolutely NEED to be at work for things to get done. I wish I could just call in any day like many of my friends.
30i try not to, bc i can literally kill my patients by exposing them. if i am not feeling good, i wear a mask all day.
31Definitely work from home. My job makes it easy for me to work from home, and it doesn't really help anyone if I come into the office and get them all sick. Speaking of, everyone in my office has some kind of plague. Hmmm...
32I absolutely stay home. My company has always made it very clear that we're expected to stay home when we're sick, so as not to infect other people, but I have a couple co-workers who come in when they're, like, dying, and it pisses me off. Stay home, keep it to yourself, and don't make your entire department sick!
33My company hates when people take sick time. We "get" 10 sick days a year yet in the past, they adjusted your yearly raise downward the more sick time you took. If you don't take any sick days in a year, you get 2 extra paid vacation days.
I used to drag myself in all the time when I was sick. Nowadays, I don't care. If I have a fever, I call out. Others, however, drag themselves in just to look good and score those extra 2 days.
34As an E911 operator ... I cannot call in usually. I've got to be down and out - not only am I considered essential personnel - we're too short handed. When one of us calls in, someone else HAS to come in. It's not feasible to leave our station unmanned.
35I hate when people come to work sick. They walk around sneezing and coughing and spreading germs everywhere. Before you know it half the office is sick and the place has almost shut down. I work in small department (4 people) and none of us can afford to be sick for long. We have an office rule that you do not come in sick, ever. I usually work from home when I am sick unless it is a bed bound illness.
36Guess my sick is different from other people's "sick". I have crippling far too frequent migraines and something else that's currently undiagnosed. For that reason when I suffer from migraine attacks which can be a day and include things like temporary blindness and extreme vertigo - it's best that I do not go to my job and endanger the lives of the citizens of SF. Plus the medications that I have to take to try to resolve the migraine attack are not safe for driving which is my job - the DOT says I can continue to drive so long as I don't drive while under the influence of these medications because I am receiving constant medical care.
So yeah I call in sick - lie down- hope the room stops spinning- that my head doesn't explode or maybe that it finally does - that I get my vision back - and that my employer continues to understand that this is not something within my control or even my doctor's control.
Sometimes I forgo taking the medications so that I can work and I end up in an ambulance during my shift on my way to the ER or after my shift I end up wandering around for hours because I have no memory of where or who I am then I end up at the ER getting treated. It's all fun. Not. Either way I pay.
37Yeah, employers should really take a second look at their sick days policy, especially if they're asking their employees to take sick days out of their normal vacation days. In the end, productivity will take a nose dive if someone comes in sick who SHOULD be at home, BUT came in b/c they didn't want to lose vacation time and ended up infecting the whole office who now has to do the same thing--come into work and infect more people.
Employers: treat your employees like the adults that they are. If they decide they are sick enough to stay home, give them the benefit of the doubt that they're not just "trying to get out of work." Because if you have so little trust in your employees, then why did you hire them in the first place? You trust them infront of your most important clients, but not enough to let them be the judge of when they're too sick to come in? WITHOUT punishing them for it?
38I save my sick [PTO] days for when it's beautiful outside or I want a "mental health" day. Unless I'm super duper sick [which rarely happens]
39I actually have the flu right now and I called in sick today... However, that doesn't stop the emails, or the expectation that I answer them.
40I'm doing my student teaching this semester, and we get no sick days. Any days we miss we have to make up at the end of the semester.
So calling in sick is not an option. I'd rather be sick and miserable at work than sick and miserable at home and knowing that I've only added more to my workload.
41Oh my God, I call in sick all the time.
42Unfortunatly I work for a chiropractor and they always want us to come in and get adjusted when we are sick. Really it's the last thing I want to do, I don't like people touching me when I don't feel good.
43This is really selfish - but I'd rather go to work sick than use my PTO to sit on my ass and watch TV. If I'm going to take PTO then I want to appriciate it...on a trip or a vacay or family time. I just drink some of that vitamin C stuff and tough it out, and hope I don't get everyone else sick.
I told you it was selfish.
44unless I am having stuff coming out of both ends.
45I can't call out because I'm the only person that works in my office. Lately thought that just irritates me because not only can I not call out but I also feel bad about taking vacation time as well.
46i only call out sick if i have a fever over 101 or if i'm in such bad shape that i have to go to the hospital.
47I am sick at work right now
wah!!
48Yes, I have an account on Sugar network. Just a bit busy and wanted to respond quickly.
I'm currently at work, still recovering from bronchitiis, but it's not congatious. I've already missed three days of work for the past two weeks due to being sick, and I don't even get PTO. So, yeah. I kinda HAVE to work so I can make a living, which really sucks.
49I would like to stay home but when I call in my boss makes me come in anyway saying there is no one else to cover for me and she refuses to help out anywhere.
