Okay, so it might not be a love letter from that guy — what's-his-name-with-the- gorgeous-blue-eyes — that you've been waiting for since you last saw him on New Year's Eve 2000. Taxes really don't ignite any excitement but you need to deal with them, and now's the time to get fired up!

For those of you that haven't adopted filing your taxes electronically, your tax returns are in the mail. The IRS says that it mailed 16.5 million 1040 packages to the taxpayers that usually file paper returns, but the goody-envelopes don't include any of the five AMT related forms.
I'm assuming that most of you file your taxes electronically, so you won't be getting anything from the IRS saying that now is the time to start on your taxes. Take this as your reminder to start getting organized! Do you use a tax service like H&R Block? Make an appointment now before their time slots fill up like the best restaurants — you know, the ones that only have reservations for 5:00 pm? Hop to it!

I do my own taxes
I am so good haha! I taught myself becuase I want ALL MY RETURN to
go to me
1I do my own as well
2I've always done them electronically but then mailed them in because the electronic filing cost money (I forget how much; somewhere around $25, I think). Can I just file electronically for free too somehow? I usually use one of the major tax software programs.
3oh my god, i still havent done my taxes for 06!!! :S
4im gonna just do 2 years in one shot. and hell no im not doing them myself, i got so flustered when i tried to last year... hence the never doing them...
Um wow ur_momm, better get on those!
I do my taxes myself. The cost for a place to do them would just be detrimental to my return. Plus I don't have anything special with my taxes, just my income statement, and my student loan part.
5I use turbo tax, which has worked well for me. I used to do it by paper, but the one year I graduated college, started working, and lived in a different state from where I worked, my calculations were way off. The refund checks I got back were a completely different amount from what I calculated. From now on I plug in answers to the questions the computer asks, and trust that it's a lot smarter than I am.
6Just got my packet today. Joy.
7The fee to get them done at H&R and other places are atrocious! If you keep all your tax documentation together as it gets mailed to you, it is easy to complete it on your own online. I always do mine online and I have mortgage interest to deduct, charity donations to deduct, and educational expenses so I get a lot of paperwork. What I do is put a folder by my front door/mail catching table that says "taxes" a crossed it. That way when I go to file I can just lay everything out on a big table to see all the form #'s and make sure I don't miss anything. as I input the into I put it back into the folder. Then at the end I staple all the tax forms together, print out a copy of my return, and file in my fire-proof safe! Done!
8My dad does my taxes, I'm lucky!
9I have someone do them for me but not H&R. I will take care of it as soon as I receive my forms as I cannot abide waiting to the last minute and driving myself crazy.
10ohh most people are not excited, but since i'm a big accounting dork, i am! i just wanted to let you know that there is a service out there called volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) and if your income for the year falls below a certain threshold (35,000 maybe?) you will qualify to have someone like me (yay) do your income taxes free of charge. ask around, ask your local university or municipality to see if they have a VITA program!
