I have friends that have admitted to signing up for a savings account without even considering shopping around for a better rate.
If it were a one-time thing (say purchasing those beautiful Marc Jacobs pumps on impulse without checking online for a better deal) I might not be so devastated, but not seeking out a high yield savings account means money lost every single month.
I think the problem lies in the fact that most people don’t realize what their rate or yield is. Our friends at WaMu offer a high yield savings account with 4.75 percent APY*. Do you have any idea what yours is?
Thank you to WaMu for sponsoring this post.
*Annual Percentage Yield (APY) effective 1/09/2008 on Online Savings account tiers $0-$9,999 and $10,000 and above. Interest rate and APY may change at bank's discretion after account opened. WaMu checking account must be linked at opening. $1 minimum opening deposit on both savings and checking. Fees may reduce earnings. Restrictions apply. Total Deposits at Washington Mutual are FDIC insured.

4.10% I have an ING Direct.
1Savings? What savings? lol
2I have heard WONDERFUL things about about ING's Direct Savings. I should open one...
3I had never thought about this...i have BOA and it's only 0.20%...damn!
4HSBC Direct, it's the bomb!
5I think mine is two. And then once I get over a certain amount it goes up and keeps going up.
6Woo hoo! 4.75% for me! Thanks, Credit Union!
7ING! 4.5! Anyone wants a referral (and $25 FREE) message me!
84.65%...It's Emigrant Direct and I heard about it on the the Suze Orman show.
I have WaMu checking, and their savings account rate SUCKED before this offer. I closed my WaMu savings to move it all to Emigrant.
9ING Direct...it's awesome! I do automatic deductions from my checking account for each paycheck I get and get great interest on my savings and even better on CD's
103% is great for checking
11ING Direct for me. It just went down to 4%, I think. It was 4.75% when I opened it... Dang.
124.75% - ING. Love it!
13Sorry - double checked. 4.1% on ING now!
14So, for all you people with ING accounts, is it easy to transfer between your ING account and a bank checking account? I have a crap APY (0.45%) with Wachovia, but it's a piece of cake to instantly transfer money from my savings account to checking (I keep all my money in savings, and only transfer what I need when I need it to my checking account). Is it just as simple from an ING account for transfer to a bank account?
15ING direct is awesome... even though their interest rate is not quite as high as Wamu and some others, they more than make up for it with their bonuses for referrals (they also have interest checking and CDs). by signing up thru a referral, you automatically get $25, and for every person you refer after that, you can $10 (up to 25 people). Message me with your email if you'd like a referral invitation!

16mine is only 1%, but i have 5% on my CD
17I don't understand how the banks (ie Bank of America) are going to stay in business without offering these no fee high yield savings accounts. It's about time.
At BoA my money was getting a pathetic $0.50 interest a month if I am lucky...now that same amount gets $5.00-$10.00+ in the high yield account.
It's worth the hassle of switching banks, believe me.
18I love WaMu!
19to ammend my previous comment, ING direct now lets you refer up to 50 people (which is up to $500 bonus you can get). this is new, i just realized.
20my boyfriend likes to keep all the money at one bank for simplification reasons, so we've got a joint savings at wachovia that we can transfer into from our individual accounts.
21my personal money is in a money market at my work earning over 4%.
Julie ING is really easy. When you set up your account with them you connect it to your checking/savings account you want to take them money out of, or deposit into. After the account is verified its as easy as pie. On ING you pick the account to draw from, the amount, and what account it is going to. It usually takes a couple days to go through, but for an account you shouldn't be touching, its not a problem.
22ING direct all the way.
23Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
24oh i need to get a new savings account so badly. i hate thinking about how much money i've lost in interest over the past few months.
25oooh, I wonder if I could get that rate on my WaMu savings? I have a really low-interest savings account with them that I just keep a little money in for emergencies, but I do my longterm saving over at ING. I should look into more of my options at WaMu, though.
26I'm a loyal WaMu customer and an ING customer. They are simply the best for saving's rates!
27Julie - I agree with SkinnyMarie. It is really easy (but you do have to have actual checks and a checking account) but once it's set up it's a piece of cake. However, it will take at least 2 or 3 days to transfer money, which isn't always convenient.
28Wamu makes me nervous since there is actually no actual bank here in MA where I live...
29Thanks for the info, everyone. Another friend also warned me that once you open an account, the money isn't accessible for up to two weeks. I think I'm going to go ahead and open an account but only put roughly half the contents of my savings account into it and see how it goes -- I can always transfer more over later.
30I think this is just what I was looking for -- a few months ago, a huge long term CD came up, and I decided to transfer the money into my savings account rather than renew, as I'll be using the money to pay for my honeymoon. I wasn't happy with all that money left sitting in my piss poor APY savings account -- my monthly interest on it had dropped from over $100/month to less than $5 -- really depressing!
I'm a little grossed out that this is a sponsored ad...
31I have no idea. Shame on me!
32I have one with ING Direct so it's over 4% and it changes regular in the upwards direction. I don't have much there, but it helps me to actually keep my money in my savings account and not spend it by being an online bank. It takes like 3 days for a transfer to occur, but I like it and the bonuses for referrals and other specials they have going on are great. They have done this thing where they give you a special increase in your rate for money that you deposit during a period of time. It encourages you to save more. Good stuff!
And just like with the other INGers, send me a message if you want a referral email. I would be glad to send you one so you can get the free $25 into your account when you sign up.
Oh yeah, no minimums or fees with ING either.
33Love WaMu!
34Oops, I clicked the wrong one. I too have a BoA account and the % is teensy tiny. Of course, I just opened it so I could have overdraft protection for the checking account I opened there and I only opened the checking account there b/c I was moving out of state and didn't know what other banks were around aside from BoA.
35Being the college student that I am, I did not have a savings account until my cousin referred me to ING Direct. It's easy, and there are no fees, minimums, etc. I really didn't think I could ever save money (I love to shop a little too much), but i put in 10% of every paycheck and the 4.1% interest rate really helps it. If anyone would like a referral to get $25 when you open an account just message me. Happy saving!
36My rate is 5.0 on WAMU (but i believe it may have gone down recently) and 4.10 (or around that) for ING. Yup I have two - better safe than sorry I say.
37Ladies - get your hands on the book "Women and Money" by Suze Orman. Inside you will find a promotional code for a T.D. Ameritrade account that not only yields 5%, it will also reward you with $100 if you directly deposit $50.00 every month for a year (wihout withdrawing). I can't think of a sweeter deal than that! I love Suze!
38ING all the way! The best part about it (for me at least) is that you CAN'T access your money too quickly. It gives me enough time to talk myself out of withdrawing money I shouldn't be withdrawing. Which is the point of a savings account anyway
39ING for me. I love how I'm not tempted to withdraw money. I've been thinking about opening up a second savings elsewhere as well. And Julie it's so simple to open up ING.
40I'm also on the ING bandwagon. I like how straightforward and simple it really is.
41I signed up with WaMu back when they offered 5% for life...gotta love it!
42Left ING for HSBC.. better rate!! And very easy to transfer money to and from my checking acct!!
43I have ING and I love it. Very easy automatic deductions.
44I have an HSBC online savings with 4% and it comes with a debit-style card for accessing the cash through an ATM.
45Really, HSBC is a better rate?
46Boo, my roommate got me an ING direct savings account with a wee nest egg for my 24th birthday. I am twenty five and I am such a loser I haven't even opened it, all because its taken me this long to accrue the 250 dollars needed for the bonus free gift money. I finally have it though so I will open this week, for sure! Gosh, I'm so glad savvysugar started. It's good to get these reminders in unexpected places women my age actually hang out, so we are ambushed with reminders we'll actually heed!
47At this point 4,01% and it has risen every year!
48I have ING too, but you know, I didn't research it. I went on reference from a friend. I like ING because I don't have a minimum balance, so when I need cash (which is at least 2 or 3 times a year)I can get it out easily. But reading everyone's comments, I'll def. be looking into HSBC and WaMu. Also, it seems like people's local credit unions offer really good rates. I live in the area of St. Mary's Bank, which is the oldest credit union in the country (Southern NH People Shout Out!), and they're still going strong.
49ING for savings for sure...it was 4.5% when I opened my account, but the federal tax rate was cut twice at the end of last year...so it's at 4.1% now...
