I was mildly amused when I first saw this Book Safe ($15) and thought it seemed just a step above hiding money under your mattress. Then when I clicked on the item to see its full description, I saw that it's currently on backorder! I guess a lot of people thought it was a good stocking stuffer?

I definitely encourage keeping a locked box with passports, important papers and a small amount of cash for emergencies, but am not convinced that this book safe is really necessary. What do you think?

I do think that it's a good idea, because unless you're a thief that looks online to see what book safes look like before the heist, no one would know that your valuables are in that particular book. It's not a new idea though, I have seen book safes on other websites and I remember reading a craft book maybe about 8 years ago that gave instructions on how to make one yourself.
I think that is a really neat idea.
I think if anyone was going to rob you, they certainly wouldnt be wasting their time looking to see if you have any 'book safes' they would look for real safes though. I mean, it sounds so funny and cliche, but its a really good idea!
I've had one of these for years! Let me tell you, it's great fun and it works. I keep my passport, extra credit card, and bit of emergency cash in there. When I was robbed this past march, the thief had gone through EVERYTHING. Including my sugar container. The ONLY place not disturbed was my book collection. Saved me from a lot of trouble, especially since I live abroad. A regular safe is just CRYING for attention.
I love it! I've seen these before and have always thought they were neat.
Nifty idea. My one fear would be a fire - although brdwaystarlett's story sure has me seriously considering one of these.
Great idea--I don't think a common thief will look through a book collection for $$ as brdwystarlett said. I mean, if you only have one book maybe! I think a lockbox would be tempting to a thief, even if he didn't have the skills to break in to it.
I would keep extra $$ in it...and I don't have a lockbox for my passport or SS card, so I would definitely stash those in there also. Fire would be a worry, I wonder what the box is make out of?
This reminds me of a news clip I saw years ago. A woman got the fake soup can to put her expensive jewelry in, and then accidentally donated it to the food bank. So books/cans really can work as a safe of sorts- just make sure you don't give them away!!
wow, i was just going to say it was cute but i doubt i'd use it for anything really important until i read brwdwaystarlett's post. maybe i will invest in one hahaha
Better yet, use these "safes that look like something else" to put your real irreplaceable valuables (such as passports, family heirlooms and important documents) and a real safe as a decoy (maybe a wad of cash, all dollars - looks impressive, but minimal loss when stolen).
Valuables should absolutely be secured, but yogacooker had a valid point! Still, something is better than nothing at all.
Not a bad idea!
I think my dad has one, but there's nothing in it. I just remember thinking it was cool was I saw it so many years ago. I didn't know that's what it was meant for.
They sell some of those at Kirkland's. I like the look of a vintage book, but why not get the real deal if you're not going to need to stow stuff in it? ;P
My parents are book collectors, and we have books in every room in the house! I think having something like this at their home may be brilliant AND baffling at the same time!
It would have to have a cover that someone would believe that you had. If it was something strange it really would stick out and wouldn't be concealing anything, you might as well have a small regular safe.
Haha to Jaime. When I ordered mine from The Container Store 4 years ago, they were distributing random books; you didn't have a choice. I got worried about that too when I saw the Bio text book one advertised, but took a chance. They delivered the autobiography of Broadway choreographer Jerome Robbins. Half my books are about musical theatre history. I don't know how, but they gave me the PERFECT decoy book! (I even read it... up to the point where they stop to make the safe lol)
It's a good product for someone with a large book collection. If a crook entered a home with one lonely book lying there...
looks great and is a fantastic idea. i would like to make my own but don't have the materials to do so.
i think its genuis!
very cool, i would hollow out a HP book
i chose other. it is not exactly brilliant nor baffling. just amusingly clever. although i doubt i would use it unless it had some sort of locking method and possibly firesafe options, your average thief would not even know.
Neat idea, kind of...
I suspect that many of these are used to house "alternative valuables" rather than the insurable kind, eh?
I didnt think it would actually work, I'd get this kind of things because its just cute and I would just keep non valuables in it...
it's a good idea but i wouldn't trust anything too valuable with it.
I like it.
is it fireproof?
i have one! it's great!
This reminds me of movies and tv shows in which the characters would just take a real book and cut out the pages. This probably would work unless your robber was incredibly interested in reading.
It seems fun, especially for kids who want to safe guard baseball cards or something. Heck I'd get one, but I wouldn't keep anything valuable in it, that's what bank accounts and safe deposit boxes are for.
I've always wanted one of these!
It seems like it could work but I'd assume a lot of people buy it for the novelty/silliness. Maybe as gag gifts? heh
I think it is a great idea.
hey if you think about it, it's really not a bad idea. say you only have a few things you want to keep safe - a real safe certainly wouldnt be cost effectivve!
I have two of these, they are great.
Haha...I could never find my book safe. My library is huge!
