I'm a sucker for statistics that show how many days we spend each year sleeping, brushing our teeth, sitting in traffic, etc. Did you know that New Yorkers spend about a week each year traveling to their jobs? They spend about 38 minutes a day commuting, while it takes about 25 minutes for most Americans to get to work.
I was surprised to find that the average San Francisco commute is slightly longer — or was longer, the Census data is a bit dated — than commuting in Los Angeles. Whenever I'm visiting L.A., I feel like a quarter of my trip is spent in traffic!
So, how long does it take you to get to work?

Getting to work is not that bad for me. Like 12-15 minutes because I am going the opposite way of everyone. Coming home (I hit up the gym along the way) it'll take probably about 15-20 minutes to get to the gym, then only like 5 to get home from the gym.
Now that I am going to another city a lot for business trips though, it's going to take me like an hour and a half both ways! Oh well, at least I am gettgin paid WAY more
1an hour and half unfortunately... which includes a lift from my boyfriend then a bus then a subway ride then another bus.
2without the ride from my boyfriend, it's a bus, another bus, a subway - then a transfer - another subway, and another bus.
saving the planet = suffering a long ride to work and home...
My job is 37 miles away and it takes about 35 minutes to get there. I am lucky that I have no traffic to sit through. And I get a monthly mileage check. It sucks when its bad weather or if I'm running late, but other than that, its a time to sip my coffee and listen to my favorite morning show.
3Everyone's going to hate me, but my commute takes between 3 and 5 minutes, depending on traffic lights.
4Mine is between 20-30 minutes including a walk to the subway station, the train ride and then a walk to my office. It's pretty good considering I live in a massive city!
5It takes me 3 because work is just a few blocks away. Only traffic would be : a row of ducks crossing the street, schoolbus or a lost tourist. (live near the hotel where I work)
6My commute is okay, 25 minutes or so. Never any traffic, so I pretty much know down to the minute what time I'll arrive at work. I have my coffee and listen to the radio, so it's tolerable.
7I live across the street from my work so it takes 5 minutes on a slow day!
815mns tops
9at my last apartment it would take 15 minutes including walking to the T which was super. Now that I'm not living in Boston proper it takes 30 minutes if I take two trains or 40/45 minutes if I take one train and walk the rest. Not bad and the walk is lovely during the nice weather.
1020 minutes or so tops. If the weather is bad, a half hour to 45 minutes, but usually it's 20 minutes. Whee!
11I'm there in 15 minutes but there is no headline reading on the way. I drive there!
12My office is 6 blocks from my apartment, it's about a ten minute walk.
13yeah parking at my work is terrible so i make sure to live in walking/biking distance....sometimes i walk just because biking is so fast and i want to enjoy the day hahaha
14I live about 20 miles from work. On a good day it takes me about 30 minutes, on a normal to bad day about and hour and a half.
15A couple of weeks ago we got some snow (a very tiny amount) and traffic was so bad that it took me two hours to go 10 miles. At that point I turned around and worked from home. It took me 10 minutes to get back home.
oh and i live in montreal, canada. so in the winter, if we get a snowstorm, it can sometimes take 2 1/2 hours to get to work/home.
16About 2 minutes to the subway - and then my ride to work is about 25 minutes - pretty great considering.
17It takes me 20 mins to get to work. In the summer though the traffic is really bad (live on Cape Cod) and it can take me like 30-40 minutes to get home. It sucks and most of the drivers are tourists and don't know where they are going and it can be really aggrivating.
18I live 3 blocks from work. I walk.
19Psh, the average commute in NJ has to be longer than that!
I would so much rather ride the train for an hour than my awful 1-2 hour drive! It's a minimum of 50 minutes but sometimes when the sun is out, people get sun glared and forget they can drive over 35mph!
20I work from home, so no commute!
21My commute is a 5 minute drive. I wouldn't mind a 45-min commute, provided I could ride a subway and not drive. Haaaaate being behind the wheel - too many idiots on the road.
22It's not too bad - 15-25 minutes. But when I move out, I'm totally moving closer to work! I could spend those extra minutes preparing dinner or whatnot!
23Ugh, I drive to work in Jersey, too. It takes me anywhere from 50 minutes to 1h20m. Like Tidalwave, I also experience those who cannot drive due to the sun glare.
24Hour and a half. It sucks.
25About fifteen minutes to my retail job, about thirty to get to my student teaching location. Eventually I will have a regular commute to a real job.
26an hour and a half, give or take 15 minutes. i agree that it sucks.
27I actually clocked it this morning, even with College traffic ( i live in UF territory) it took only 8 minutes.
2815 by car and about 20 if use the subway (that includes walking 4 blocks). I used to commute for 45 - 60 minutes by car and it sucked. Never again will I waste almost 2 hours of my day sitting in a car.
29I just wake up and I'm where I need to be.
30Coming into the city from Jersey usually just takes me a half hour but getting back into Jersey during rush hour takes about an hour.
31Mine all depends!! There's one major interstate, besides side roads, that everyone takes to get into downtown. My city isn't huge, but it is the capital. It's a bummer when there's an accident and it's backed up. So... sometimes it takes me 15 minutes, and others 35-40!
32Door to door is about an hour. I don't mind spending the time on the train since that's when I brainstorm for meetings, watch tv, listen to music, play games (thank God for technology).
33I work about 21 miles away from home and it takes me about 45 minutes usually, but up to an hour with traffic. If I leave work at a time when there's no traffic, I can get back in 30...but that doesn't happen all that often!
34about 30 minutes depending on how long I have to wait for the bus. If I took the metro it would take maybe 5 minutes less, but I'd have to transfer & walk more. with the bus I just get on and can read--or check email/browse the internet on my iphone (can't do that on the metro) and it lets me out right in front of the door to my office building. It's relaxing.
35I go opposite of rush hr traffic and I love it! Under 10 minutes to work (highway) and 15-20 minutes home (I cut thru town because the highway doesn't have an exit close to where I need to be).
36I work about 22 miles from home, but it usually takes about 45m-1h to get to and from work every day. I don't think you can drive anywhere around the perimeter of Atlanta in less time than that though. Thankfully I work 4-10 hour days a week!
37live 2 miles from work
38I used to have an hour-long commute, and my office wasn't near any public transportation, so I had to drive. It was pretty miserable, but on the other hand, I think all the NPR and podcasts I listened to then made me a little smarter!
39I recently moved. I used to live 15 miles from work, and now only 2.6, approximately 27 blocks! I currently drive to work, but come spring I want to start riding my new shiny bike!
40i think my drive right now is just about perfect - 25 minutes. i get to listen to some good music and since i usually go in later than most commuters, i dont sit in much traffic.
41I live in NYC and it takes me about 45 min to get to work. Sometimes in traffic it takes me over an hour!!!
42I have an hour and a half commute (give or take about 10-15 minutes). It's awful, but my favorite radio morning show (Chio in the Morning, WRDW Philadelphia - Wired 96.5) gets me through it!
43My commute is from Philly to New York (2 hrs. each way)....gotta love the power of sleep
44I would like to see how Atlanta rates in these statistics. Pretty much everyone I know is in the car for about 45 mins or longer.
45Takes me about 15 minutes to get to work in the morning, although if I'm running even two minutes late I end up getting into traffic and it takes longer. But it usually takes about half an hour to drive home (on the same roads) due to traffic. Not too bad, really, except that I loathe driving. I really need to move somewhere with more public transportation options.
A few years ago I had an hour commute on the most boring road ever. Pretty straight, not much traffic, no scenery. I am absolutely appalled to admit that I used to prop a book up on the steering wheel and read during the drive. So lucky I never got in an accident.
46I live 8 miles from my work, but it took me 45 min to get there (over Bay Bridge to SF). I started a carpool group in my apartment building, so now we get to take the carpool lane and it takes just 15 min!
47Eh...about 20 minutes or so...if I take the freeway. However, I do drop my son at daycare and grab some coffee before work, so I'll say...30 to 40 minutes before I get to the door?
48For me its 10-15 minutes tops... my poor husband drives over an hour... on the bright side... he knows the latest songs... where as for me Im stuck in last years hits... lol.
49I live in the middle of D.C. and don't own a car, so I walk to work -- a little over 20 minutes each way. I like the walk (except in the rain/snow) and I like that I'm not contributing to global warming by wastefully driving everywhere.
