The personal lives of the Grey's Anatomy characters are more dramatic than most, and coupled with their chaotic jobs at Seattle Grace Hospital, it's no wonder they're constantly strung out. Surgeons have the most stressful jobs compared to all the rest, according to a recent list compiled by CareerCast.
Twenty-one stress factors like deadlines, life-and-death situations, and physical demands were considered to determine the rankings, and given the pressure-filled long hours that go with being a surgeon, it's hard to think of a more stressful job.
Here are the rest of the professions that topped the most stressful list; not that the job of photojournalist isn't highly demanding and tiring, but I'm surprised to see it ranked third.
- Surgeon
- Commercial Airline Pilot
- Photojournalist
- Advertising Account Executive
- Real Estate Agent
- Physician (General Practice)
- Reporter (newspaper)
- Physician Assistant

Do any of the jobs on these lists seem out of place to you? Are there certain professions you're surprised not to see on either list?

I'm more surprised by the real estate agent... I know it's a cut throat business, but still, I wouldn't guess it'd be so high on the list...
1real estate agents basically work 24/7. I could see how that could be stressful!
2I'm surprised that real estate agent isn't higher! I know so many real estate agents who have struggled the past few years.
3Lots of jobs in the medical profession would probably be considered very high stress, only because it's so extremely unpredictable. Some days it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong does and when you have to deal with people on top of things, you get pulled in all kinds of directions.
4I was surprised that air traffic controllers aren't on this list. i have a friend who is one.. they work 45 minutes then have a 45 minute break because their job is so difficult.... he said it's doing 45 straight minutes of calculus... plus there is no room to mess up. you mess up... and you crash two planes together.
5Where is teaching on the most stressful jobs list? I'm about to keel over right now from the stress of it.
6I am surprise that a software engineer is so low on the list! I know that my step brother always seemed stressed out when he did that! Maybe it was just because he was starting out. These lists are always very interesting to look at!
Thank you!
7How is Nursing not on this list? Or Air Traffic Controller?
8I'm surprised that teaching isn't on the stressful list. I work in a school and teachers face major stress and do tons of work outside of the paid duty day in order to keep up with everything on their plates.
9The biggest omissions are nursing and teaching, both are incredibly stressful mentally and physically.
