They don't call it a vacation for nothing . . . or do they? Taking time off work is a necessary luxury, but sometimes so much preparation goes into having just a few days away, you're too exhausted to enjoy the beginning of your time off. Not fun.
I try to step away on true vacation days, but there are times when I can't resist a peek in the inbox — and then, once you look, who's to stop you from writing back to one or two (or 10) people? Do you put on your out-of-office message and take your time off seriously, or do you find yourself still working even when you're technically not?

I put my out of office message on while I'm on vacation but still find myself checking emails and taking phone calls. I really don't like coming back to work and finding issues then.
1no not really
2i try not to check my work email and no one ever calls me or anything
i like to relax
Unless I get a phone call from my boss, I don't even bother looking at my emails! It'll just stress me out, and honestly, the point of going on a vacation is to relax and not worry about work.
3Yeah, I basically always reply to emails when I'm on vacation. I don't really find it stressful for the most part. Mainly it just allows me to not be bombarded when I get back to work.
4yes... can't help it
5No way! My vacation is my time. My work email only gets checked on company time.
6Absolutely not! If something is important my boss can call me and I will follow up. No need to get involved in anything short of an emergency while on vacation!
7No way. I would only do it if the boss asked - luckily, he's never called when I was on vacation!
8No way. When I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation and I don't need the stress of thinking about what's going on at work while I'm gone. No one is indispensable; there will always be someone there that can answer any questions that people would have.
9only to tie up loose ends...or to get myself back into the mode of things when i return from vacation so i don't get a barrage of things when i enter the office
10Absolutely not -- vacation is my break to get away from work! I work harder the week or so before leaving to make sure that any ongoing issues can be handled by my coworkers. Out of office messages on email/voicemail are there for a reason. I definitely come from the more old school separate work and personal life mentality.
11NO - it's MY vacation time..it's supposed to be a break! I don't bring anything work related with me - no laptop, no Blackberry..nothing.
12Absolutely not. My husband will sneak on the laptop and blackberry, but I try not to even think about work while I'm on vacation.
13I check e-mail intermittently when I'm on vacation and sometimes write back to one or two people, but for the most part, I avoid work-related stuff. It's my vacation and I should be relaxing, not worrying about work!
