We each develop a unique saving style over the years, which is why it's so important to divulge your winning tactics with friends. You never know how far your little tip will go for the next gal. Spectra recently shared an incredibly smart tip in the comments of my 5 Savvy Ways to Use Your Phone's Calculator and I just had to pass it on. She says:
I use my phone calculator to figure out my gas mileage every time I fill up. I reset the trip odometer when I fill up and I just divide that number by the amount of gas I put in to see if I got decent mileage on that certain tank of gas. I know, it's kind of anal, but it's just something I do.
Saving on gasoline requires great effort so I was impressed by this simple move. Do you have a tip for readers? Join our How Do You Save? group and share your helpful suggestions. Here's a detailed guide to posting questions or posts to groups if you are new to the PopSugar Community.

Smart idea!
1This is a little old fashioned, but I was taught to keep a little notebook in the glovebox and write down the date, amount of gas I got, and the odometer reading (along with any services like an oil change). While the amount and type of driving I do varies week to week, this lets me see what kind of gas mileage I'm getting and with a fairly extensive record, I can spot problems as they start to crop up -such as a couple weeks of declining gas mileage.
2Glad you liked my tip! It's something I picked up from my husband (he's a mechanical engineer as well as a mechanic). It gives you an idea of what kind of driving you did on the last tank (city vs. hwy) and it's kind of fun to see what the max mpg is that you can get!
3wait, i thought everyone did this (maybe not with the phone, but with a calculator maybe)? or at least estimated in their head? why wouldn't you calculate your mileage? i don't think this is "anal", this is normal human behavior like using unit rates (such as $/fl oz) to calculate which product is the best buy at the store. keeping a log of it may be a little anal, but just simply calculating it is normal, IMO.
