Flight, check. Hotel room, check. Rental car, check? While it's usually cheaper than constant cab rides, especially for long distances, I like to at least look into local public transportation alternatives before budgeting for a vehicle.
I know it depends on the location and the trip's purpose, but I've got friends that wouldn't dream of visiting any location without getting a car, including NYC where parking often costs as much as the rental rate itself! Members of sharing programs like ZipCar can still grab a vehicle for minitrips in available areas, so how automatic is auto booking for you?

Yep. I bring our portable navigator, and we're good to go.
1Depends on the location. No for NY & Vegas or most international trips. Yes to almost everywhere else.
2It depends on where we are going. If we go somewhere that is easy to get around using public transportation (Paris, London, NY) then we don't rent a car, but if its somewhere that isn't easy to get around on public transportation
3(Louisiana, Hawaii etc.)then we will.
sometimes.
4Not when I go to NYC but on thanksgiving weekend I am heading over to San Francisco. Hey Savvy, what are some unique places we can drive around in your town?
5Totally depends on what kind of trip it is. For major cities, usually public transportation and walking are good enough. Road trips and other places where the sites are spread out, we definitely rent a car.
6It depends, when I was in NYC this summer, no rental car needed took the subway and trains everywhere but when I went to Utah had to rent a car.
7I said never cause for most vacations it's not been necessary to rent a vehicle.
8sometimes. i think that it depends on where i'm going. my mom and i went to hawaii recently and we didn't plan to rent a car but once we got to the big island, we realized that it was kind of a necessity so we ended up getting one which was a huge help since we got to drive around the island on our own.
9Depends. When we visited my SIL and BIL in Colorado, we rented a car so we could drive in the mountains and stuff. I think if we went anywhere internationally on vacation, we probably wouldn't rent a vehicle.
10I have a few times (to drive up to Whistler from Vancouver, or to the coast from Seabring) but only for a day-trip as part of the vacation, not for the duration of the whole trip. I like exploring cities on foot and public transportation cos you get to meet people and notice more things that you might miss if you were focused on the road.
