Thanks to the recession, consumers are questioning their brand loyalty for just about everything. People who once faithfully bought one brand of paper towels or detergent are switching to lower-cost, generic versions to save money. These brand name concessions seem small, but what if the downturn coincided with your time to buy a new car — could you be faithful to your brand of choice?
Sure, when it comes down to it, a car is just a car — it gets you from point A to point B, and so, serves its purpose. Still, others would argue that, today, cars aren't just the things we drive — they become extensions and statements of who we are and what we believe. To a certain extent, some might view their car's brand with the same staunch loyalty with which they view their political party affiliation.
Still, over the course of the past year, this is all changing. Only about 20 percent of car shoppers stayed with the same brand when they purchased a new vehicle, whereas in the past, nearly four out of five American car shoppers were faithful to their car brand as repeat customers for years — or even across generations. So, tell me, how much does your car's brand matter to you?

hell yes
1it totally says a lot about me
No--that's shallow.
2Yes, it's part of my identity. Tiny, efficient, cute. But it also proves (mainly to myself) that I worked my ass off to save over up half the amount of the car in cash and use it as a down payment. Plus it's totally my dream car.
3Not really, I couldn't care less about cars. I went to college in NYC and didn't need one. Only have one now because my boyfriend needs it for work & so I can go see my parents.
4No, it's not and never has been. I just look at cars for practicality.
5I look at cars as transportation but that said, my car has to be nice and clean (no dings or dents).
6I love cars. Love, love, love cars. There are certainly cars that say "I don't care about cars and only care about practicality", but if I had a car again, I'd need something that hits me on an emotional level, not just a practical one.
In high school, I drove a 78 Fiat Spider, super cute, completely impractical. I don't own a car now (I've got a Bianchi Milano, and damn right that's part of my identity), but the boy has a GTI, which is TOTALLY him. It's small and compact (we live in SF), easy to park, tricked out with all the options, but it's still a stick shift.
7I'm with TidalWave. My car has always been a disconnected, practical item.
8This is difficult for me to answer, because on the one hand, I bought my car (a Toyota Yaris) because it was small, economical, and practical. But on the other hand, I really identify with my Yaris because I think of myself that way too. I mean, I'm 5 feet tall (or small, as I like to say) and cheap as hell...me and my Yaris are a match made in heaven!
9Haha Tarabara I have a Toyota Yaris too! I bought it 3 years ago and that little car is just like me. Quiet and short
A lot of my family members and friends think the car is too small for them to be in, but I am comfortable and that is all that matters. It may not have much
storage space but its good with gas and the random cup holders come in handy during my numerous road trips.
10I never thought about it before, but I guess my car is just like me: rode hard & put away wet
11Ah yes, aistea, gotta love all the random cupholders and secret compartments
12i feel bad about saying yes, but it is. i have a really pretty car and most people are surprised when they hear what i have since it's an H3 - but i love it cause it's orange and sparkly.
13Cars are just meant to get you from point A to point B reliably, that's all. I pick my cars based on fuel economy, engine/parts quality, and price. I'm more interested in getting the most miles for my money than I am about what brand of car I drive.
14Maybe. I just traded in my adorable but problem ridden beetle for an accent and am kinda going through a "I dont have a cool car" depression now.
15yes mine is- i always wanted the one i have. i finally bought one (used) and then totalled it- and i couldn't bring myself to buy anything different so i bought another one (also used but a newer used version). there are practical aspects- such as AWD which helps where I am but honestly its pretty and i love it!
