Savvy....

I like some of these articles but really hate that I have to take a quiz just to get to the bottom line. It is why I don't bother to even look at much of these you post.

I am commenting now because I think it would be interesting to see how many feel the same way. The topics are great...you grab me...but you lose me when I have to take a test to get the info.

It feels like a commercial...."Wait! But that's not all! Before we give you the real information you want---just answer the following questions"

By then I am like.....blah blah blah.

I know some people really love a quiz---I guess I am just one that doesn't.

4/5...I subscribe to Money and I read this article. It's very interesting. I was surprised at how low-stress being a college prof is, but then again, remembering how laid-back some of my tenured profs were, I can see how that would be true, lol.

It is interesting that you'd say that Spectra. I am currently in college and I wonder when the survey was taken. The last day of last semester one of my professors got the news that ALL her classes were canceled for the fall session.

Apparently tenure means nothing if your classes are cut by the budget. One of the classmates asked her what this meant for her financially and she said that was $4000 a month she will not have to live on and worse,it was the money for the adoption of her next child.

Perhaps professors in California are hurting more than others but I think probably not. On the other hand, I'd like to see them dissolve the tenure program completely so we can weed out those who haven't updated their syllabus in over 10 yrs and reward those who really want to teach.

i agree with cheekyredhead. having to take a quiz to find out about the story is sometimes time consuming. there should be a "skip to the end" option or something

I agree with the first comment as well. Especially when it's a pretty pointless quiz like this one.

I am in total agreement with Cheeky. There are so many times that I have just bypassed something that I found interesting because I didn't want to go through the slideshow or quiz. To me, part of the "fun" of blogs is that they are a quick read with interesting information.

As far as giving tenure to a professor, there are more politics involved than just his/her teaching ability, especially when a University (research institute) is involved. If the professor is good at drawing research/grant contracts to the University (and the University receives a percentage of that contract off the bat as it's own revenue), the University most likely would award the professor tenure (to encourage him or her to stay). Contracts/grants are a big source of revenue for Universities. It's right up there with tuition income (or it may even surpass tuition income, as some engineering contracts and grants are multi-million dollars).

I agree with cheekyredhead. I find it really annoying to have to answer questions both here and on fit just to read the information. In fact, it's probably the barrier to me reading many of the articles.

I'm studying to be a telecommunications engineer, so I'm glad to hear it's not a stressful job.

I also agree that quizzes are really annoying, there should be an option to skip them and get to the information. Same goes for slideshows, clicking a dozen times to go foward when scrolling down the page would do is such a waste of time...

cheekyredhead, i'm so glad you mentioned this. it has been bugging me for a long time. in fact, i only got through the first question of this quiz before i abandoned it. if there's no option to skip the quiz altogether, might it be possible to put all the quiz questions on one page so we wouldn't have to keep clicking to a new page?

Hmm, well in my opinion, the reason I go to a site like Savvy is because it's fun and interesting, and quizzes make topics like jobs and pay a lot more enjoyable than just reading through a boring article in Money magazine. I liked guessing and then reading each explanation instead of just seeing a list (even though I bombed the quiz!)

Well I'd like to have the option to skip the quiz and just get the info. Savvy appreciates the feedback and does read her threads...so let her know.

I am pretty surprised about the jobs that were even included in this! I guess I misunderstood things about most of these jobs.
