Southern California is notorious for its insane traffic; drivers there might be pulling out their hair, but the average commuting time is surprisingly not the worst in the nation. The US Census Bureau declared that commuters from East Stroudsburg, PA spend the longest time getting to work, averaging 40.6 minutes each way, typically driving to their jobs in the NYC area.
Other commuters who work in NYC can empathize; residents in White Plains, NY and Wayne, NJ have the second-longest commute, averaging 36.9 minutes. Those times are much greater than the national average of 25.5 minutes. On the flip side, the shortest commute goes to Grand Forks, ND where workers drive an average 14.3 minutes to work, followed by Cheyenne, WY (14.9 minutes) and Roswell, NM (15.7 minutes).
How long does it take you to get to and from the office?

I'm surprised the MD/VA/DC region isn't tops...
1My commute changes from the morning til the evenings.
The mornings I can get to work in 15 or 20 mins and the evenings it depends 30 to 45 mins.
2This is interesting and made me curious to learn the commute times here in Toronto. As I suspected, they are the worse in all of Canada (http://content.monster.ca/10264_en-CA_p1.asp) Traffic is terrible and our transit system sucks. Luckily I walk to work but the majority of people don't.
3Anyway, the average is 79 minutes roundtrip.
syako--it surprises me, too. I have friends who commute over an hour one way, and I don't know anyone in the md/dc/va area whose commute is significantly below the national average of 25.5. In fact, my commute is 25-30 minutes and people around the dc metro area tell me I'm lucky to have such a short commute!
4You are lucky Kimmie!
5I'm in Southern California and the commute can be horrible, been there done that. Right now I'm working about 2.5 miles from home and it takes 5-7 minutes. I work with people in the md/dc/va area and everyone there drives 45 minutes to over an hour each way.
6I have to cross the Bay Bridge (ugh!). My drive to and from Oakland averages about 40 minutes each way.
7I'm so lucky. I live 6 blocks from my office. Even if I walk sluggishly (which I usually do) it takes 10 minutes or less.
8I'm lucky that my commute is only 15 minutes for 8 miles, but I live in OC. When I commute to visit my boyfriend in LA, the 35 miles takes an hour and a half.
9I live in the Midwest and many of my coworkers live fewer than 15 miles from the hospital, but I have to drive in from the next city, so my commute is around 25 minutes. I would probably not take a job that required a very long commute. 45 minutes would probably be as long as I could handle each way.
10Most days it's about 35-45 minutes, but today it took an hour and 15 minutes. Thank you, CSX.
11I live in the South Bay of L.A. County, and my commute to midtown L.A. takes an hour, sometimes an hour and a half.
12My commute is about an hour and 15 minutes long. I'm moving closer to the city where I work though in about a month and it should cut my commute by at least half an hour--I can't wait.
13About 40 minutes in the morning and an hour in the evening. Sometimes my evening commute can even last up to 1-1/2 or 2 hrs. OH JOY. I HATE it with a passion.
