The next time you're kvetching about your apartment's shortcomings, consider 27-year-old Atossa Movahedi's one-bedroom Chelsea apartment. The New York Times tells the story of Atossa's search for something within her price range that wasn't a studio and located in one of her preferred neighborhoods. After living with roommates in various Manhattan neighborhoods, she was determined to find a place to call her own for about $1,600 a month.
When it became obvious her budget and vision wouldn't work together, she reconsidered and increased what she was willing to pay for monthly rent. After a long, frustrating search, Movahedi found something she could live with in her now apartment, but the place isn't perfect — the apartment is missing a bathroom sink. She says the shortcoming doesn't really bother her (she notes that her hairdresser doesn't even have a bathroom) and said, "It forces me to do my dishes right away. I make sure the kitchen is really clean."

I can imagine brushing my teeth in the kitchen sink, but washing my face and, if I were a guy, shaving in there? That just seems totally unsanitary.
1No, but I'm not that pressed to live in NYC. there are, beleive it not, other fun cities !
2that just sounds like a rip off... What does she do after going to the bathroom? she runs to the kitchen sink to wash her hands? Just doesn't sound right to me.
3There is no way I could live like that. The managers/owners should have done the right thing and cut the price in half for her.
4I guess I'm just really out of touch with how expensive rent is in other parts of the country. For $1800 a month, I'd expect my house to have a freakin' whirlpool in the bathroom. Sometimes I'm really glad I live in the Midwest!

6My boyfriend looked at an apt in the East Village that not only lacked a bathroom sink, but the shower was in the kitchen. For $1600 rent I told him "hellz no!"
7We pay $1800 a month and have three bathrooms. They all have sinks.
8I used to know a family who had no sink in their bathroom and it was pretty nasty... nothing like cooking dinner and have someone come from using the toilet to wash their hands lol

14Honestly, if there was a bathtub or shower with running water, I'd be fine with it. A tub is a just big sink that you can stand in, after all.
15No way. I feel sorry for people that live in NYC. I'm a frequent traveler and I've traveled to NYC and loved it but I could never live in such an expensive city. It not only costs an arm and a leg to live there, but being around 8-9 million people would be irritating. I hate it when people act as if NYC is the only livable city in the entire universe. I think its nuts that anyone would actually put up with what this renter is currently putting up with.
16no. i have to say that from living in NYC for a long long time - you can def find a place in that budget that has a sink and all that. granted it might be little but you'll still have everything.
