It's second nature for me to rinse a dirty dish before placing it in my dishwasher; it's what I was taught to do growing up, and the habit always made sense until I came across a tip from Consumer Reports.
The value focused publication suggests that if saving money and water are household goals, we should do the opposite and resist rinsing. CR estimates that just 10 percent of Americans have stopped prerinsing their dishes. What's your dish ritual?

We have rinse dishes since our dishwasher is getting old...
I pre-rinse my dishes, but my roommates don't, so when they come out of the washer, sometimes their dishes are still 'dirty.'
I used to, but not anymore. When we moved into a house with a dishwasher when I was 13 or so, my mom didn't "trust" it to get the dishes clean and she made us hand-wash all the stuff before putting it in there (which drove us NUTS). I have a pretty decent dishwasher now, so we don't really rinse stuff before putting it in there unless the food is really caked on or something.
I usually never use a dishwasher as it's just me and my boyfriend, but when we do use it for special occasions, I always pre-rinse. It's not that I don't trust our dishwasher, it's just what I grew up doing.
I only used the dishwasher once a week. I used the dishwasher - as sort of storage, and I turn it on once a week so that it smell fresh and clean.
Forgot to answer the question - I rinse the bowl before putting it in dishwasher, but I do not rinse plates, silverware ...
May be my dishwasher is not good - I have no problem with the plates, but some of the bowls still are not clean if I did not rinse it before putting it in. Or may be it's the way I load my bowls into the washer that I did not have it face down.
I just make sure the heavy or crusty stuff is rinsed off.
yes, have to b/c our dishwaher does not have a disposer! i hate doing it, but i'd rather do it than risk clogging the dishwasher and not having one at all!! i really hate doing dishes by hand!! hopefully when we get a new one it won't require rinsing.
water's included in our rent, so I rinse.
I rinse bowls, cups that had milk/soda/juice, and heavily soiled dishes and utensils, but that is about it. Usually I won't even entirely clean it, just enough so that it'll come out of the washing machine perfectly clean. It's not a water conservation issue. I mean, I have a dishwasher, it should wash the damn dishes! However, in my Apt., my deep south apartment, everything is sort of on "southern efficiency" -- not the best, but decent enough so you don't want to eat a bullet.
Yes. We only run it about once a week and crusty dishes freak me out so I rinse with water before putting them in there.
never
We don't use our dishwasher.
No, I don't have one.
We have to because our dishwasher's old and crappy but we only run it once every couple of weeks, like if we've had friends in and there are extra glasses etc. For the most part we do our dishes in the sink.
I wish I had a dishwasher. And if I did, I'd rinse first, but not do a thorough scrub. An old roommate insisted on doing a boiling water thorough hand washing of every dish before putting it into the dishwasher. It was such a big ordeal that dishes would sit in the sink for two weeks before he'd get to it and we'd be down to one fork. How is that in any way cleaner than just putting them into the dishwasher?! He was nuts, clearly.
i do now but i never used to. when i was 'younger' i figured that it was all the job of a dishwasher to take care of cleaning everything, and always wondered why my mom would pre-rinse things but now that i do things on my own, i do it and i think that it really helps in getting really clean dishes in the end.
