Call it an end-of-Summer fire sale. From Aug. 16 to 31, San Diego's Rancho Bernardo Inn is offering extremely reduced prices on its rooms that typically cost more than $200. The "Survivor Package" becomes cheaper with every amenity a guest gives up, and a $19 nightly rate applies if guests forego breakfast, air conditioning, lights, sheets, and the bed. The hotel staff will go as far as to replace the bed and headboard with a tent.
So what's the draw? The bigger hotel amenities, like three swimming pools and a golf course, are available for guests to enjoy. The hotel is hoping the promotion will pay off down the road when patrons who enjoy their tented experience return for a later stay at full-price.

Yes. Bring an air mattress.
1yah i could do without a bed but not without an A/C or lights??
2That's what I was thinking, skigurl.
3No lights or AC? I don't think so...I agree with Lilkimbo and skigurl, even to use the pool and golf course.
4like they said, i would pay that much and not sleep in a bed, but they need to include lights and AC. Otherwise, i could just sleep in my car.
5Wouldn't it be more work for the hotel to take all that stuff out of the room? This promotion doesn't make any sense to me. They'd be better of renting out floor space in one of their ballrooms for people to spread out sleeping bags.
6I agree, how much work is it to take the bed out, quite a lot, doesn't seem like the best idea there, but hey if they wanna give a $19 room and there are those of us willing to not have a bed then why not. Also after they move the bed won't there be a lot of carpet discoloration because there has been no traffic under the bed that it would look pretty gross and maybe $19 is all they can charge when you see how dirty the floor really is!
7No a/c? No thanks !
8Depending on the circumstances, I may consider it. It's in San Diego, so in my opinion, air conditioning is unnecessary.
I would bring a sleeping bag and flashlight (for nighttime).
As long as the room has running water (and a toilet), I would be fine.
9Thats cheaper than camping sites in San Diego!
10Taking the bed out would be a HUGE pain. How much you want to bet that you'd show up and the bed would still be there?
The front desk person would act like you got lucky or something.
11Is the hotel renovating? Maybe those beds are coming out for a different reason then just this "survivor" rate.
12And yeah, taking out a bed would be a real big deal, wouldn't it?
No way. When we first moved into our apartment we had about a week before we found a bed. Never. Again.
13I would go without a bed, but not air conditioning. I'm not sure how the weather is there, but I wouldn't feel safe enough in a hotel to leave the window open and I imagine it would get stuffy at the least. It would be a cool idea for, say, a hotel in NYC. I'd totally go without a bed to stay there for $19/night. I'd just bring my own pillow and blanket- even with baggage fees, it'd be less than $200/night.
14I'd go without a bed and AC, but I'd probably want the lights. Do you get to use the hotel's wifi? If so, it might be a pretty ok deal. Just bring a good air mattress.
15If I've got access to a shower/toilet and some place to crash at the end of the night - I'm fine sleeping on the floor. When I'm vacationing some place, I could care less about what hotel/motel I'm sleeping at. 9/10 chances are that the beds are crappy anyway. I wanna spend my money on food and attractions - not bug-infested mattresses.
16Hahaha! All these people who are like, "No AC? No WIFI?! OMG NO WAY!" are So screwed if some giant global disaster happens and we're forced to live survivor-style anyway. You idiots aren't going to know how to live once your lipstick melts.
17I had a lipstick melt just yesterday, but thankfully, I lived through it and I still know how to live today. It was a close call, though.
On a side note, not wanting to stay somewhere without a/c doesn't mean that one couldn't survive without it. It's all about how much little luxuries are worth to you.
