More and more women in Japan are making a surprising career choice: drinking and flirting with men for a huge salary. Although "hostessing" used to be considered shameful, it’s becoming a more attractive option for young women.
The lowest paid hostesses earn at least $20 an hour, while the highest paid can earn up to $300,000 a year. Since young women without college degrees have very few career options in the midst of Japan’s recession, making over $100,00 a year just for providing men with drinks and "attentive conversation" is pretty appealing.
The drawback, say some hostesses, is the late nights and heavy drinking, which can obviously take their toll. And some experts worry that although hostesses are not paid for sex, they can be easily sucked into Japan’s underground sex industry. Still, many people view hostesses as independent, successful career women. The country’s most famous hostess is a national celebrity and is considering retiring at age 27. Even a member of Japanese Parliament admits she was once a hostess herself.
Would you consider a position like "hostessing" to be more financially secure during hard economic times?

I totally would!
1i think that i would if i knew that i would be safe. you hear about the horror stories but if there's some type of security with it - then i see nothing wrong with the concept.
2TOTALLY! I'm a cocktail waitress so I already get paid to flirt haha, I just can't drink too much while I'm working cos I'm afraid of messing up other people's money
3I say no but only because I know I would be terrible at it! I'm too much of an introvert.
4i think this is a career were you have to be careful, because a lot of men will cross the line and try to make you a prostitute.
5Only as a last resort, not a first resort.
Truthfully, I think this is something I would be good at. Although I am a natural introvert, I do have good social skills.
6I loved this article, I would take the job in a heartbeat.
7Not a chance.
8My personality would make me a bit fit. But is there a job where I can be paid a lot to wittily insult men? That's my forte!
9Sorry, a bad fit, not a bit fit!
10"Yes, if I needed to."
Not even if I needed to. If I was offered, I'd take it without batting an eye, and then bat my eyes for tips.
11Wow, does anyone remember geishas? Sounds like easy money, but it would also be so easy to cross the line. Hopefully, this would be a temporary job to cover the bills while you worked on something permanent you could do when you get older and not as attractive as a hostess.
12Sounds like waiting tables, without all the hard work, and better pay. Annnnd, I wait tables already anyways, so hell yes.
