For those of us who deal with sales taxes on a daily basis, any reprieve from paying extra can be an exciting difference. Several states designate certain days to give shoppers a break from paying the extra tax and they often coincide with back-to-school shopping as an incentive to hit the stores. Plan your shopping trips around the tax holidays in your state.

I love these tax holidays. Some of these are really good deals, like the NC computer one up to $3500, that could be saving you about $300! (depending on their tax rate)
1Since when is it only up to $100 in Texas?
I worked in retail for two years not long ago (at all) and I assure you it wasn't just up to $100 back then.
2Stupid Wisconsin is of course NOT doing this. Minnesota doesn't tax clothing purchases ever, so if I'm ever there I always make sure to buy clothes. I'll have to let my sis know that Iowa is having a sales tax holiday. She might make a trip to Dubuque to pick up some stuff. Actually, I might try to get my husband to take a drive down there to pick up some clothes and while he's there, he can get the refrigerant for his truck A/C (apparently it's illegal in WI, but not in Iowa).
3Anonymous @ 1:31, I'm a lifelong Texan and I can assure you it's always been clothing, school supplies and backpacks up to $100 for each item that are tax-free. Of course, it's not actually *that* much money - $100 total purchase with tax for a pair of tennis shoes only takes off about $8.00 worth of tax here, and $92.00 is still a lot, especially when you can find good $50 shoes that are $4.00 off the tax.
Some (well, actually most) retailers have additional sales aside from the tax-free that bump some items down under the $100 mark, thus making them tax-free.
Though I don't like tax-free holidays anymore, a lot of places jack up the prices during the weekend to make up for the tax and get some extra profit. If you want or need clothes and things that you're waiting to be tax-free, get them NOW while they are still stocking them and have every size and color available. The summer sales now take off more money than the tax-free holiday ever did!
4They are of course not doing the tax free holiday in Taxachusetts this year
5Ofcourse CALI is not doing this. Damn you.
6Thanks Ohio...geeze
