Crazy in love might be one way to describe Michelle Cawthra, a former Colorado Department of Revenue employee who stole $11 million in unclaimed tax refunds from her employer. With her morals blinded by love, Michelle deposited unclaimed tax refunds and other state money into her ex-boyfriend's bank accounts over the course of two years.
She received a 24-year sentence after pleading guilty to racketeering and testified, "I did things I don't think I otherwise would have done had I not been in love with him." Those things included using co-workers' passwords, forging documents, and creating fake businesses to deflect detection. Talk about a nightmare employee. The crime beneficiary, ex-beau Hysear Randell, is currently on trial for theft, forgery, computer crime, and racketeering.

wow - that's just insane. people should realize that you'll get tracked for things like that and you'll get caught. i don't think that there's any rationale that would make it worth while to know that you'll end up doing jail time.
1really people just push it too far. $11 million?! See, if she had stopped at just $1 million, she never would have been caught.
2She should have never stolen one cent because none of it belonged to her. I think she deserved what she got and I think the boyfriend should punished too.
And what's up with his bank? Usually banks notice when odd amounts are deposited into a persons account. Even if it took 2 years of her doing a little bit at a time. The bank should have questioned the deposits and where they were coming from.
