News flash: California is not the only state experiencing budget problems. Its expansive economy and furloughed government workers may get it a spot in business headlines, but other states are also struggling with shortfalls. According to The Wall Street Journal and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "at least 47 states are facing significant shortfalls in their 2009 and/or 2010 budgets." Yep, that's pretty much the entire country.
We all know what it means when states struggle to pay their bills — higher taxes. Those states hurting the most are turning to taxpayers to make up the difference, and SmartMoney ran the numbers to determine which residents should prepare to pay more taxes. Here are the states included in the group's projections. Do you live in one of them?
- California
- New York
- Florida
- Massachusetts
- Arizona
- Nevada

I'm helping my sis move to Arizona at the end of the month, so boo to this.
1NYC girl here...so crap
2Aww man, I live in Florida and am from California so I plan to eventually move back there.
3I live in Massachusetts right now but plan on moving back to Cali someday. I'll be screwed either way.
4I am hoping NYC doesn't put the tax back on clothing under $110!!
5I never understood having to pay state taxes like you pay your federal income tax. I've only lived in Texas, and we get most of that revenue from taxing all of our goods. 8.25% isn't terribly high...maybe that's why our state has a surplus!
But yeah, I'm totally avoiding EVER living in a state where I have to pay state income tax.
6wheres CT on this list? CT is horrible
7Oh, wait...need to correct myself. We DO pay state taxes in a way, if you work and make over a certain amount [I don't have a job right now, so...yeah]. But it's not a terrible lot of money, and they take it out BEFORE you get your paycheck. We don't have to write out a separate form for state income taxes every year, though. You can't miss what you never see, right?
8Thank the Lord no, IL already has the highest sales tax in the country in Chicago... we certainly don't need any more hikes!!
9DAMN YOU NEW YORK!
10well that's just crappy. i live in NY right now - and i have property in FL - so that means that i get it 2x. gotta love the 'times' right now.
11I live in DC but my parents live back home in FL. They pay for my place here in DC while I'm currently trying to find a job. My dad always notes that he pays in DC about half of what he pays for taxes of FL even though our place here is more expensive. Then again, I don't have voting rights on what do do with that tax money... Heh...
12I already have to pay enough state income tax and property tax here in Wisconsin, so I'd be really ticked if taxes went up a lot more than they already are. I think we're getting set to increase cig and booze taxes though...if they up the price of beer, the state's revenue will probably double, lol.
13unfortunately, Florida....so yes
14I got tired of the super high cost of living, and super high taxes and fees in California. I just moved to Washington state and love it here =)
15How is New Jersey not on this list. Everything is so high here!!
16Damn you, California! (*shakes fist angrily)
17Wow, ANOTHER person moving from Cali to Washington? I moved from Orange County to (American) Vancouver and love it here! No income tax when I go back to work (I'm currently pregnant), no tax on food, and I can drive across the bridge into Portland, Oregon to shop without paying sales tax! I used to live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and it's HORRIBLE tax-wise.
