Now that more of us are frequently cooking at home to cut down on food expenses, it would make sense that our grocery bills would go up to reflect the change. On average, how much do you spend on monthly groceries?

Oh God, it definitely varies by month. A few months ago, we had a budget of $400, and survived nicely. However, sometimes we did like $1000. We can be terrible with our budget.
I wish we could do 200 bucks a month. It's only two of us...where the hell does the money go?
1We used to spend around $200 for the two of us but since the prices of everything keep going up i think it is probably closer to $300 now.
I have been trying to do more shoping at BJ's to save money.
2I know we spend too much for the two of us. It usually comes out to about $500-600, but that includes not only food, but toiletries, paper goods, and dog food (we have 4!). We do most of our shopping at Costco, which I really think helps.
3Chrstne: Wow, $1000 bucks a month for food? For two people? I really hope I don't sound rude (don't want to be at all) I'm just curious if you guys buy a lot of pre-made stuff or imported goods? I'm trying to figure how two people eat that much only because I'm in NYC and my mom feeds a family of five on about $450 a month, many times a little less.
I myself vary from month to month but only by around an extra $50 or so (depends). My big ticket items are pastured/grassfed stuff from the farmer's market and ever other month I buy some frozen seafood. Generally though I do about $60-$90 per month just my stuff.
4I use mint.com to track my monthly spending and I've been trying to keep our grocery spend to around $900 a month. We were spending $1200 a month for a family of 4 and I wasn't even cooking every night....
5about $300 a month for two, but we also eat out a lot.
6about $400 a month for two of us in nyc.
7~ 300/ mo Chicago
8We spend around $300.00 a month on groceries (including toiletries, paper products, cleaning supplies, etc.) We're trying to cut down even more!
9$80-100 a month for two people
10We shop at Vietnamese/Chinese markets
~$300/month for one in the midwest. That includes groceries, eating out, medications [$45+ depending on what runs out when], toiletries/cleaning stuff, and cat things.
It might run more if I've been by the butcher that month; I'll stock up on meat and it'll last 2/3 months.
11I'm living at home, so a lot of paper goods are taken care of, so probably $100 a month. I get free lunch at work, so it's just breakfast and a snack.
12$500 / mo for the 4 of us in So. Cal.
13We go grocery shopping every week and the total varies between $40 - $80. So, I'd have to guess we spend around $300 a month for 2 people, 2 cats and a doggie in Portland, OR.
14About $200/month for the two of us, but that's including other household things like alcohol, toiletries, etc. I also spend an additional $70 a month on food for my animals....I buy the good food for them because they are like my furry kids, lol.
15About $450/month for 2. After reading all these posts I guess that's a little high! I will say though, I cook a lot of courses...I love to cook so I probably go a little overboard. Also, I only buy meat at Whole Foods/Kosher Markets...so that is probably adding to the cost also.
16$400-$600 a month for two people. It's more than I'd like to be spending on food, but I food is kind of a passion. I rarely spend anything on clothing and shoes, or at the salon, or on going out, so I figure it's ok to indulge a little somewhere.
17About $200-250 for two of us, and that's with eating out 1-2 times a week. And my husband gets free lunch at work.
18Only about $100 a month, if that. I eat out almost every meal. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help myself!
19$100-150 a month for one human and one cat in the South. It's hard to figure what I buy that's just food items out of that though since I shop at Wal-Mart and buy tolietries, paper items, cat food, etc in one sweep.
20It's around $250 for the two of us per month. That's a little more than it was a year ago, but prices keep going up, and we've been buying more fresh produce lately, which gets a bit pricey. . . .
21We are at about 400 a month for two people in the midwest. That includes toiletries, beverages, & cleaning products. It may vary by 50 bucks a month, we do go to Costco and stock up on paper products, beverages, etc every other month or so, those are our more expensive months.. but that is three meals and two snacks a day, just about 7 days a week. Maybe one or two meals out a week. Maybe.
22BTW, that is because I am a vegitarian and my hubby to be is not, so our dinner are basically two different meals! I'm starting to get in the habit of making bigger meals and freezing extras as much as possible. It's always great after a hard day to go.. oh yeah, we have soup in the freezer, awesome, no cooking tonight!
23We don't buy much processed, pre made stuff. But our grocery bill also includes booze, toiletries, etc. So maybe that's why it seems like a lot. On just FOOD itself, it's about 3 or 400 dollars a month. I have no idea why. I mean, healthier food is a bit more expensive, but it's two of us. I know he does buy some processed stuff like hot pockets and what not for lunch at work, but that's about it. And I guess it's another 400 on things we need for the cat, personal care, and the alcohol thing, which on weekends really puts us over the top.
I wanted to cut the grocery bill down, just for food, but I have a hard time finding ways.
24probably about $500-$600 a month. i have a child with some allergies that means i have to shop at speciality stores, and we eat grass fed beef (again, grain allergy means this is necessary). there are 4 people living in our house.
25Chrstne, well if it includes all that extra stuff then it def. makes more sense. I was wondering how two ppl. spend $1000 purely on food a month, lol!
26Lickety, I know what you mean about grassfed being more expensive. I buy it because to me its more responsibly raised meat (not due to an allergy) but yeah, sometimes you see the difference between a grainfed steak and a grassdfed can be like $9 extra bucks a pound in some places. Ah well, its a good thing I don't have very much meat/poultry/seafood in the end.
I prefer to eat less of a higher quality food than more of a lower quality one.
My husband and I tend to spend about $500-$550 per month. But we brown bag our lunches, bring our own coffee, never get take-out and only eat out about twice a month.
27generally about $200-$300 total, but that doesn't include how much we eat out/order takeout, etc.
been trying to cook more at home so hopefully it will go down over the next few months.
28About $600 - $800 a month for 3 including a teenager who will eat us out of house and home.
29Approx. $1500 a month for a family of 6 and that is only groceries, it does not include any eating out (that's an entertainment budget item).
30^ and "groceries" does include various sundries in addition to food items. (just not eating out, as mentioned).
31My husband and i spend $1000 per month on all "groceries" this includes all food, toiletries, and anything you can get at a grocery store or Target. I live in Northern VA, just outside DC. Also we eat out like 1 or 2 times a month. I cook all the time. I shop at Wegmans, Whole Foods, and HT.
32I live at home and don't have a job right now...but I have to help pay for groceries. Whatever we spend every month, it's entirely too much.
When I lived by myself, I would only spend maybe $100-150/mo on food. But now I have to pay for a lot of frivolous stuff that I don't eat or want - but other people do. Ugh.
33Btwn $500-$600, for the 5 of us. That includes diapers for triplets (1 case a week). We only eat out/in a couple times a month (that's part of our entertainment budget). I use loads of coupons, buy on sale & use the local farmers market.
34Anywhere between $400-500 between myself and my fiance (we live in NYC). We shop for basics at big grocery stores and use lots of coupons, but we also are big on high-quality meats and organic produce so we also shop at our local butcher (also helping to support small businesses!!) and Whole Foods. I also have specific dietary needs for health reasons, so I frequent health food stores. We also have been doing a lot of entertaining of friends at home instead of going out for dinner. We also come from cultural backgrounds that place a heavy emphasis on food and enjoying meals with friends and family, so we make sure to get the quality stuff. It makes a big difference!
