I do sometimes wish I'd majored in nursing, but now that I work in healthcare and see what nursing entails, I'm kind of not surprised that it's a tough position to fill. It's hard work and not for everyone. I don't think I'd have the patience for it most days...kudos to anyone that is a nurse; that is one tough job!

I graduated with a supposedly recession proof major (microbiology) and am getting my masters, but still haven't landed a job in my field. Nor have the majority of my classmates currently looking, so you might want to scratch that from your list I do love it though, and wouldn't have wanted to study anything else, and I'm sure the jobs will come back.

JenDeck--Hey, I was a biochem major and I'm working as a microbiologist right now actually. It's actually better than nursing because it's a lot more regular as far as hours go. I've considered going to grad school, but I'm not sure if I could get a better/higher-paying job if I did, so I'm putting that off for a while. I just consider myself lucky for finding a job that IS in my field, especially in the small town I live in.

I have a Bachelor's in English and a Juris Doctorate...and I'm a Financial Aid Advisor at my alma mater. Sometimes a NON recession-proof degree (or two!) can be re-purposed and used to find a job in a very different but very stable field. I might be making less than some lawyers, but I also have a job I love, in a town I love, with excellent job security, benefits, and a viable promotion and expansion path. Not too bad! I advise graduating students to analyze the skills they've acquired in their major and find ways to use them in fields that are currently more stable.

I am kicking myself right now for not majoring in accounting. I'm not TOO far off- my degree is in business (logistics and operations management), but I really wish I had done accounting instead.

Up until now I am regretting my college/career choices! I majored in Fashion Merchandising because I want to be an apparel buyer but I have been having an EXTREMELY difficult time finding a job as an assistant buyer and the pay SUCKS... and I am currently working in the industry! If I had to do it all over again I would've chosen a recession proof major FOR SURE!

I am so wishing I'd gone into medicine right now.

I have a BA in English--just about useless but I loved what I studied and managed to get a job right out of college at a university library. But I'm going for something more useful the second time around and working on an MBA . . .

my husband is an electrical engineer. in college, while his friends were out partying he was studying. then right out of college they started at a higher salary because of the visa's allowed to foreign workers in engineering. finally it's turned around and EE's are in demand. never thought i'd see the day, lol. but it couldn't have come at a better time.

I felt like I wasted money going to school for no reason. I major in Business Management, Finance and marketing. Still haven't had a job since i left school in 2008

I like what I studied in college, but it didn't help me get a job. I don't know if I would want any of the supposed "recession proof" majors. I think having a more realistic picture of the job market before college would have been more useful. Sometimes I think I would have been better off skipping college and learning a trade.

I am going to graduate in December with BA in Cultural Studies. I like my major but I know it's not going to help me much, I should have re-thought my plans to go to college. I wouldn't trade the education or experience but do feel it was a waste of money. I tried going into medicine, unfortunately it's not for me. Getting worried about graduating and what field i'm gonna go into.

I majored in Education, and I am a teacher in the fall/spring...so yeah, it's recession proof. However, I wish I made more money, which makes me feel sometimes that I should have majored in another recession proof career with a fatter paycheck. I love my job.

However, I want to go get my MA in educational administration so I can be a principal. Big paycheck AND recession proof, while still doing what I absolutely love.

Anyway, my sister in law has a degree in biology and she is screwed...so...

@cupcakers: Don't despair about your CS major! I graduated last May with a BA in Cultural Studies (loved the classes and the course work). I've used my degree to intern in PR at a fashion company, and now I do writing, editing and research for a mobile media company. I think that Cultural Studies prepares you for a wide variety of occupations that involve writing, PR, communications and even media relations.

Oh yes. I have a sh*tty admin job that I guess I should be grateful for because it's permanent and pays the bills, but it's turning into a nightmare. I've been told I'd be expected to cover for my coworker who won't be replaced, everyday I'm talked to like I'm an ungrateful, incompetent idiot; I go to bed thinking about work, I wake up thinking about work, this last week I was even up at 3am having a panic attack about it, and today I had to run out of the office to go cry behind the building so people wouldn't see me. Oh, and did I mention my job pays *nothing*?

So yes. I don't care how superficial that sounds, I really wish I'd pick a degree that'd now allow me to have a job where I could make a sh*tload of money even if I hated it. It's not like I like my current job anyway..

BS in Nursing....work in intensive care/coronary care, absolutely love it. Not only is it rewarding, but I get paid fabulously to do it and work 12 days a month.

I'm currently a History major, and I'd never want to change my major just because someone else thinks that my major isn't marketable. I plan on getting at least one more degree, if not two or three, and I know that I can make myself marketable. I believe in making money doing what you love, whenever possible. Obviously it's not always possible, but it can be. And I'd never study something I hate and go into a job I hated just to make money. Life is too short.
