Nobody wants a customer service experience that leaves you swearing under your breath, but these situations aren't exactly avoidable. MSN Money knows how important customer service is to consumers and conducts an annual survey that measures customer satisfaction.
It's named 10 companies that need a lot of improvement in the customer service department and 10 that would be good examples to the companies in the Hall of Shame.
It's apparent from the rankings that banks in general could step it up.
Customer Service Hall of Shame
- Citigroup
- Bank of America
- Abercrombie and Fitch
- Qwest
- HSBC
- Time Warner Cable
- Capital One
- Sprint
- Comcast
- AOL

Bank of America and Capital One are HORRIBLE. AWFUL!!! In fact, if you were to ask me what my worst customer services experiences have been, I'd defer to those two companies. Unfortunately I still bank with Bank of America so I have to deal with them a lot. I cut up my Capital One card a LONG time ago and discourage anyone I know from doing business with them.
1If this was just a post asking for our best customer service experiences without a provided list, I would have totally said Netflix. Their customer service is incredible. So is Trader Joe's.
2I love Costco, but I wouldn't say they have great customer service. In fact, their cashiers aren't really that great.
We do use USAA, though, and they are AWESOME!
3I have to add Tivo to the list of BEST all-time customer service experiences. They're freaking fantastic!
4I have to totally disagree with Comcast. In the last year or so, I have had to deal with them a few times, and I was dreading it, but each time they were very nice and seemed like they really wanted to help me. We had a technician come out a couple times, and both times I had a bunch of choices of two hours windows (instead of something ridiculous like 6 hours) and they arrived on time. One time, the guy still couldn't figure out why our internet was really slow, but he didn't try to blame it on our router or computers (AT&T always tried to do that) and replaced our modem anyway which seemed to fix the problem. Another time, our internet service was down. We called Comcast, and the woman gave us some generic info ("It will be up as soon as possible, blah blah"). My husband then Tweeted about our internet being down, and Comcastcares, their official Twitter, messaged him with more detailed info about our outage and gave us a week's credit, even though our service was only affected for about three hours.
5I love USAA! I've been a member since I was 10 years old, it pays to be in a military family.
6Amazon is great too!
I love Apply but haven't had to call them for customer service.
I would add DirecTV to the list of shame.
7Spint is awful! They were my cell provider and they would flat out lie to me. Then when I tried to get it fixed, they would send me overseas to a person I couldn't understand.
8Bank of America is terrible. Have your call center in the United States, not outsourced to Indonesia, or wherever. It's frustrating, because I speak English, and expect to speak to someone who understands me and who I can understand. I left them. They suck.
9I've had horrendous service from Comcast before. I will definitely try tweeting my complaints next time though and see if that comes to anything.
Capital One is bad... bad, bad, bad. They've burned me and quite a few people I know. Once I paid off my credit card with them, I vowed to never do business with them ever again.
I would only add AT&T to the the Bad list too. I can only imagine how horrible Sprint must be if they can top AT&T.
I've also heard enough about Bank of America from my circle to keep me away.
Netflix & Amazon are wonderful. I know I can trust them. Publix is a great store to shop in, but I don't know that I receive particularly great customer service... maybe it's the employees taking the groceries out to the car that put them on that list.
10Comcast and AOL really are the WORST!!!!
We used to have a Time Warner/AOL internet package, but we had to deal with AOL whenever the internet was messed up [which was like 60% of the time]. They would tell us it wasn't their fault, to call Time Warner, to call our router company, even call the CITY b/c the internet was on the CITY'S line, so they should fix it.
Was very sad when TW left and Comcast took over - jacked up prices in the middle of the contract, when we had Hurricane Ike last year, they were so terrible about it...just all over BAD.
I'd add Dell to the Hall of Shame list. They're pretty awful, too.
I haven't had to use the customer service for the 10 good companies...though I use a lot of their products. That should be the BEST part!
11Do not EVEN get me started on AOL's customer service. I had signed up for their internet and then cancelled my account. However, they had embedded some sort of virus in their software that automatically re-registered me for their service when I restarted my computer. They wound up charging me a lot of money directly from my bank account every month and when I called them, they were so incredibly rude. I had my husband talk to them and they were even ruder to him...he actually ended up screaming at the guy and the rep started cussing him out! We've vowed to never, EVER deal with them again.
Netflix is very awesome though. They're always very helpful and easy to deal with.
12Oh God, Capital One and Bank of America are the WORST! I have never had an account with Bank of America (or any bank they have bought out) but somehow they put a debt on my credit report. I'm still trying to figure out how they did that and they're not helping me. Capital One was just...horrible. Like an above poster, once I paid off my credit card with them, I was through.
13Both were just so nasty.
I would add Gap, Inc (so them, ON and BR), as well. I've called their 24-hour support lines to deal with some urgent exchanges and they've always been friendly and helpful.
Kodak was great as well, they fixed the problem right up and were super nice.
14netflix has great customer service.
i would like to add ideeli, at&t, and charter communications to the hate list. i dread working with any of them!!!!
15Sprint. WOW...I have been a Sprint customer for about 7 years. They had the absolute WORST customer service on Earth!! Last year, they have re-done their customer service department. The agents were much more friendly, and helpful. It's gotten better, but they have room to further improve. I give them 3 stars...that's a long way from -10.
16I still have to deal with Comcast and unlike Choutte, I didn't have good experience with them at all.
17After NBA finals are over, hub and I are canceling the service LOL. And get direct tv, I'm pretty sure their cs ain't much better, but at least we won't be paying as much.
Oh gah, I don't know if I'm going to like satellite but frankly we have no other choice where we live, either you get comcast or you get direct tv (sucks!!!).
Capital One is awful. I quit them awhile back. Ugh, NEVER going back to them ever again. In fact, I don't want to ever use credit card ever again.
What, no Dell?
18Dell is the worst!!! I will never, ever buy a dell again. Zappos is the best!! Whole Foods is pretty good too.
19Hmmmmmm Comcast, no surprise there!
20trust me i know when i am being treated like crap from a customer service dept. i am shocked to see capital one is often quoted as hall of shamer. I am not even a good paying on time customer and i even bother them often.they are professional, and never rude. their intrest rates suck but when you call to discuss your account they are more than helpfu! and about cosco. do they have customer service? no they have cashiers and fork lift drivers. maybe the one at door checking membership cards would help customers-i doubt it.
