Cash might be king, but one Israeli woman might have taken that idea too far. Unbeknown to her thoughtful daughter, Anat, the elderly woman had been stashing her life savings inside her mattress. When Anat surprised her mother with a new mattress and took it upon herself to discard the old one, it was revealed that she'd also thrown away $1 million cash.
The mattress had already been taken as garbage when Anat discovered her costly mistake. She's been frantically searching various landfills for the mattress without luck so far — one dump manager indicated the search would be difficult because 2,500 tons of trash are dropped at his site each day. Her mom might have a new mattress, but a good night's sleep might not be in the cards for a while.

1i keep hearing about this - and it sucks. i mean how was the daughter to know that's how the mom saved her money right? at least the mother's words are 'just leave it' - she's not getting all that upset about it. i just wonder how the daughter wouldn't have see than money was stashed inside. that much cash and you'd HAVE to notice - no?
2This is crazy. The daughter must be wracked with guilt, but really, her mom must have hidden that money really, really well if she didn't notice it in the mattress when she was throwing it out.

I wouldn't do this to my parents, though...there's a very strong old-school tradition in our ethnic culture of hiding money in the mattress, because that's the safest place to put it and not lose a dime. If I did this with an elder, I would definitely ask a parent or at least try to sell the mattress rather than toss it!
And I'm with ilanac - a million dollars' worth of cash is HEAVY in any currency. If the daughter or the people who took the mattress to the landfill didn't notice that the mattress was EXTREMELY heavy...well I just don't know what to think. That kind of weight is kind of hard to miss.
I sure hope she finds the mattress - and hopefully the money's still inside [somebody totally could have noticed and taken the money out]!

6This reminds me of an episode of the George Lopez Show where George's mom's house had a fire and the destruction included her life's savings she had in her mattress.

9a million dollars? don't buy it. it might have been her life savings. but no way was it a million dollars.
10I can't really blame the daughter. Her intentions were good. I think the mom shouldn't have been so secretive about her fortune. Still a very sad and tragic situation, though.
